Is Juicing Right for You?

Home Juicing has become popular recently. Is it good for you? Some people may like to juice due to recent trends of "juice cleansing," "juice detoxing" or "juicing to lose weight."

Marketvegetables

According to dietary guidelines for Americans 2010, reports say most Americans over the age of four years are not eating enough fruits and vegetables and do not get enough dietary fiber and other important minerals such as folate, potassium, magnesium or vitamins A, C, and K in their diet. Fruits and vegetables are also a great source of folate important for women who may become pregnant.

Juicing is one way to add more fruits and/or veggies into your daily diet. The DGA recommends the majority of fruit intake come from whole fruits that include canned, frozen and dried forms. Juicing is one way to increase your nutrient intake and take in a variety of fruits and vegetables that you may not normally eat such as kale and spinach.

You should NEVER rely on juicing as your sole source of fruit or vegetable intake. You also need to watch out for extra sugar intake. Some juicing recipes include added sugars like sugar, honey, maple syrup or molasses. Most Americans today need to reduce intake of added sugars. To avoid the extra sugar, choose juicing recipes that do not include these ingredients or use non-caloric sweeteners instead.

Juicing alone will NOT provide all the nutrients you need daily. Juicing can be a good way to introduce new fruits and vegetables into your diet, but a diet containing only the nutrients from fruits and vegetables is missing major nutrients. For example, protein and fat will need to be obtained from other foods. Vitamin D, Calcium and iron will also need to be in the diet from other sources of food. When you remove the skin and pulp to create juicing recipes you also loose a fair amount of fiber.

If you choose to juice, be sure to incorporate it into a healthy eating plan that includes foods from a variety of sources such as:

  • whole grains
  • fat free or low-fat milk and milk products
  • protein foods
Also, there are differences between a juice and a smoothie. A smoothie typically contains fruits and/or vegetables as well as other ingredients such as milk, yogurt or protein powder.

A smoothie often contains many different ingredients that may include:

  • flaxseed
  • green tea
  • kefir
  • herbs
  • and more
Smoothies are another "option" of increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Juicing on the other hand typically includes just the fruit and/or vegetable that has been made into a liquid form. Some juicers remove fiber from the whole fruit or vegetable, which in turn, removes an important nutrient. Many Americans need more fiber in their diets.

Juicing does not necessarily help you lose weight. The finished product may contain considerable amounts of calories. To maintain body weight, you have to "burn" the same amount of calories that you consume. If you take in more calories than you use, this leads to weight gain.

You should always talk to your doctor before juicing especially if you have diabetes or kidney disease. You may need to limit or monitor your intake of certain nutrients such as carbohydrates, potassium or phosphorous. Adding certain fruits or vegetables may not be recommended.

Does juicing detoxify your body? To date, there is no evidence that juicing is a detox solution.

Juicing machines can also be expensive. (source: https://www.nutrition.gov/subject/shopping-cooking-meal-planning/juicing-101)

Recipe: Buttery Pecan Protein Cookies

This recipe yields approximately 12-15 cookies, so think about doubling ingredients for a bigger batch of home-cooked goodness!

INGREDIENTS:
3 scoops Life’s Abundance Vanilla Plant Protein
1 c almond flour, quinoa flour or flour of choice
1/3 c chopped pecans
1/4 c honey
1-1/2 Tbsp. coconut oil
1 Tbsp. butter, melted and cooled slightly
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 cup milk

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and stir until a cookie-dough-like consistency forms. Add more milk by the tablespoon if needed.
  3. Roll dough into small balls, place on prepared baking sheet and flatten into cookies.
  4. Bake 10-12 minutes, or until edges start to turn golden.
This recipe requires a special ingredient of Life's Abundance Vanilla Plant Protein Powder. You can get it here:

Life's Abundance Plant Protein Vanilla

Life's Abundance Plant Protein Vanilla

100% plant based

  • 14 g protein per serving
  • 100 calories per serving
  • Silky smooth texture

  • Our 100% grain-free, plant-based protein powder is a nutrient-rich blend of clean, high-quality proteins including pea, chia, pumpkin, hemp and quinoa.

At only 100 calories, it contains 14 grams of high-quality protein in every serving. For comparison, one-half of a boneless chicken breast, cooked is about 13 grams of protein and 115 calories.

Life’s Abundance Plant Protein is absolutely delicious and you can feel great about drinking it every day, because each and every ingredient was carefully chosen for its quality and safety.

While other protein powders use sunflower oil, we decided not to use this oil because it is high in omega-6 fatty acids, a fat that is much too prevalent in the American diet. Our Life’s Abundance Plant Protein contains non-GMO coconut oil powder, which is a great source of beneficial fatty acids that are easily absorbed. In addition, this health-promoting oil adds to the delicious taste and smooth texture of our blend.

Life’s Abundance Plant Protein is ideal for pre or post workouts, breakfast or whenever you need a healthy boost of energy from protein or a quick on-the-go snack.

With a superior taste and texture, it mixes easily with water into a silky smooth, rich and satisfying shake. Add to smoothies, pancakes, baked goods, oatmeal and more for a delicious way to increase protein.
