Atherosclerosis is a condition that often begins in the teenage years or 20's. Some people will live out their lives and never experience a problem with it, perhaps never even know it exist within. There are more than a dozen activities, events and conditions that can trigger heart attacks, strokes and sudden cardiac arrests. They are:
- respiratory tract infection
- physical activity such as exercise, or snow shoveling
- cocaine use
- work stress
- anger
- sexual activity
- a heavy meal
- marijuana use
- depression
- caffeinated beverages
- air pollution
- war or terrorist attack
- earthquake
The impact of these triggers depends mostly on individual cardiovascular health. The triggers are far more likely to cause a heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest in people with heart disease than in someone with a healthy heart and arteries. Your current physical condition also matters. Physical exertion is much more likely to trigger a heart attack in someone who leads a sedentary life than in someone who exercises regularly.
What can you do when it is almost impossible to avoid cardiovascular triggers? You can reduce or inactivate their effects with the following:
- stay in shape by exercising
- do not smoke
- eat a heart healthy diet
- control your blood pressure
- control cholesterol levels
- control blood sugar levels
- control your weight
- A regular exercise will lessen the chance of having a heart attack while exercising, shoveling snow or having sex.
- manage stress, anger and anxiety
- get vaccinated against pneumonia and get a yearly flu shot
- If you are out of shape, don't try to shovel your drive
- wash your hands often especially if you have been around someone with a respiratory infection
- walk away from confrontations
- avoid indulging in rich, high-calorie meals
- stay indoors during a heat wave or on days when air pollution is high
Knowing the triggers empowers you. Knowing the things that can set off a heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest can help you avoid them or lessen their power. When you know the possible triggers it can also help you to respond faster as the quicker you act the better off you will be.
