Staying Active At Work Good as Structured Exercise in the Gym for the Heart

Staying active on the job is much like exercising in leisure time. Researchers tell us on the job physical activity is linked to reduced risk of heart failure much like regular leisure time exercise. If this finding represents a causal relationship working-aged people should experience improvement in health and longevity. This makes sense as when you are moving around at work regardless of what you are doing your heart is getting a steady work out you would not get if sitting at home.

How many times do we hear about people who are in good health, retire and then suddenly die? It is probably better for your heart health to keep working well beyond your retirement years.
It is proven facts that moderate and high levels of leisure-time physical activity are associated with lower likelihood of developing heart failure. Heart failure is not the same as heart attack.
Overall, current research tells us people who manage to be active in more than one way at work, at play or commuting in between are at the lowest risk of heart failure even when they do not regularly exercise in leisure time. source: Tuft's University Health Newsletters
This is interesting to me as so many times I have known people who said to me, "I get plenty of exercise at work." I would say , but it is not "structured exercise" designed specifically to get your heart rate up. According to research, however, this is not the case. Get plenty of walking around at your job for 8 hours or more and you are probably in just as good of shape as those who work out at the gym every day dependent of course upon your other lifestyle habits such as no smoking, limiting alcohol, etc.
