Good Nutrition and Physical Activity is Essential for Cancer Survivors

Getting over cancer is not the end of fear of cancer and this is understandable. Once you lick it, you will most likely continue to fear it will return. Cancer survivors are at a  higher risk for cancer returning as well as for developing new cancers. This does not mean there is nothing you can do about it. Many factors affect risk of cancer and survival. It is important to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle as proactive steps. These same steps will help you reduce chances of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Heart disease and type 2 diabetes are more of a risk for cancer survivors.

It is "uncommon" for cancer survivors to become more inspired to improve eating and exercise habits. You would think just the opposite was true. Research reveals dietary quality of cancer survivors on the average is poor in the general US population. It is also estimated few cancer survivors are physically active after recovering from cancer treatments.

Even worse is researchers find once poor dietary habits are developed during cancer treatment it becomes difficult to reverse the habits. It is important to stay as proactive as you can be as a cancer survivor. Some of the reasons why people develop poor eating habits during cancer treatments are:

  • fatigue
  • diarrhea or altered sense of taste
What should you do?
  • avoid weight gain (overweight and obesity increases risk of several types of cancer such as breast among postmenopausal women, ovary, endometrium, bowel, esophagus, gallbladder, stomach, pancreas, kidney, liver and prostate. The link here is possibly excess body fat especially in the belly leads to increased levels of inflammatory compounds that might in turn encourage tumors to grow and cancer cells to spread. In other cases, there are various reasons.
  • get regular physical activity that not only supports a healthy weight but also is associated with lower risk of cancer recurrence as compared to being inactive. Exercise may also reduce cancer-related fatigue. Your immune system can improve with regular exercise. Quality of life usually follows an improve immune system.

Healthy Lifestyles Can Reduce Your Genetic Risk for Heart Disease and Events

Just because heart disease runs in your family does not mean you will become one of its victims. A healthy lifestyle may cut risk of heart disease events in half. Some of those events include:

  • heart attack
  • heart bypass surgery
  • and heart-related death
This drastic reduction (when incorporating a healthier lifestyle) was apparent regardless of the inherited risk according to studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The study showed researchers that genetic risk and lifestyle factors contribute independently to cardiovascular disease risk.

What does this mean?
  • it means a high genetic risk increases chances for heart disease and events
  • an unhealthy lifestyle also increases heart disease risk
The good news here is we can control lifestyle choices enough to cut our genetic risk in half. Scientists evaluated lifestyle risk using four categories:
  • avoiding obesity
  • following a heart healthy diet
  • exercising at least once a week
  • no current smoking
They also looked at 50 different genetic variants known to increase heart disease. They found the number of favorable lifestyle habits people had, the more their heart disease risk dropped. When participants met at least three of the four favorable lifestyle categories there was nearly a 50% reduction in risk of heart events.

The study has some limitations. For example, if you have had a heart attack or bypass surgery, you need to be aggressively treated at that point to avoid another heart event. If you are one in this situation, you do not need a genetic test to determine your risk for heart disease and events as the events you have already experienced prove you were a person at risk. However, adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle has shown to reduce risk of a second event.
