Foods to Eat When You are Prone to Firery Heartburn

That horrible fire called "heartburn" is not a good way to remember the tasty food you just ate. Don't worry. You do not necessarily have to eat only a bland and boring list of foods to avoid heartburn. In fact, the foods that create heartburn are different for everyone. If you quickly forget which foods causes your heartburn attacks, keep a journal.

If spices bother you, you can still make lean meats, fish, poultry, vegetables, legumes, fruits and whole grains "flavorful." Try using smaller amounts of spices and be mindful of blends that contain cayenne or chili powder (if those spices irritated you). You can also use fresh herbs to season your foods. Use fresh parsley, oregano and basil.

Roast your food. Roasting vegetables makes them sweeter tasting. Carrots, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, squash, and Brussels sprouts all do well roasted. Broil, saute or grill food to bring out intense flavor. Eat vegetables raw. If tomato sauce bothers you, a raw tomato might not. Cut the fat when you use sauces. Blend low-fat yogurt with cucumber and basil or saute mushrooms in a little olive oil. Blend basil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese and a dash of olive oil or water, then use a tablespoon of it on food.

Other options include:
  • low-fat yogurt with fruit or nuts
  • whole-grain toast
  • a side of chilled whole grains like "quinoa" mixed with fruit or topped with some yogurt
  • think salads with protein like chicken or beans
