Researchers continue to try and find out exactly why people get fat. Is it because we take in more energy than we can expend, or is it because we just overeat, or is it because people who get fat are more sedentary, or is there something happening hormonally in the bodies of people who get fatter than other people.

- is the body more likely to store rather than burn - a calorie of carbs than a calorie of fat
The accepted explanation for weight gain of 10 obesity experts at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases is:
- people become fat because they eat more calories than they burn and therefore store the excess as body fat
There is a worldwide prevalence of obesity notes Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization. This population-wide obesity continues to occur at an alarming speed. What is the cause of our obesity epidemic? And how can we stop it are two important questions still unanswered.
It is a complicated process that makes us feel like we are starving, so then we eat more, the metabolic rate slows down and burns fewer calories. Researchers thinking is that cutting carbs should boost calorie burning and shrink body fat (in theory: "the carbohydrate-insulin theory").
When studies were performed based upon the carbohydrate-insulin theory (cutting carbs and the daily insulin secretion goes down, which should have released fat from their fat cells, boosting fat loss while relieving the internal starvation causing calorie burning to go up. This did NOT occur.
The number of calories burned went down but they found the opposite effect of instead of speeding up fat loss, the low-carb diet actually slowed it down. Yet, this particular study did not cut carbs enough or last long enough ARGUED some critics.
And so then another study was done that did not prove much difference. Results just added to the evidence from many other controlled feeding studies on more than 500 people which is the studies fail to show that cutting carbs boosts calorie burning or fat loss. Researchers still feel, however, that it is possible a very low carb diet curbs a dieter's appetite. More research and more studies need to be done and are in the process of being done. It seems the jury is still out and no definite cause and effect has been found and neither a solution to the overwhelming problem of human obesity worldwide. They are, however, still working on it and studying about it. In the meantime:
