Is Your Memory Loss Mild Cognitive Impairment, Normal Aging or Dementia?

Lapses in memory often momentary and nothing to be worried about are a normal part of aging. Some of these include:

  • forgetting someone's name
  • forgetting where you parked the car
  • forgetting why you entered a room
There are 3 levels of decline as we age according to Gary Small, MD and director of geriatric psychiatry at UCLA's Longevity Center. They are:
  1. The most common decline called "normal aging" refers to memory slips like suddenly forgetting where you put the car keys. This kind of memory lapse does not impair daily life.
  2. The next stage is when recall problems progress, referred to as mild cognitive impairment
  3. The 3rd level is actual dementia that includes Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia among others. Mild cognitive decline or normal aging does not always progress to dementia.
About 20% of people over the age of 65 experience mild cognitive impairment. This is when:
  • it is harder to remember appointments and conversations
  • more difficult to follow a sequence of steps such as recipe directions or organizing financial information to do taxes
Even with the above worsening cognitive decline most people are still able to maintain an independent lifestyle. They are considered people able to take care of activities of daily living. ADL's include:
  • basic hygiene
  • preparing meals
  • paying bills
Some typical signs of dementia include:
  • asking the same questions over and over
  • losing the ability to accomplish complex tasks such as cooking
  • becoming lost in familiar places
  • having a hard time recognizing common items like toothbrushes and TVs
  • having trouble coordinating movements
  • neglecting personal hygiene
The progress from normal age related memory loss to mild cognitive decline to dementia can take many years. One of these does not automatically lead to another. Some of these can be reversed depending upon the actual cause. In other cases, progression can be slowed down. There is mounting evidence that there are interventions and lifestyle habits that can delay symptoms. Some interventions include:
  • controlling high blood pressure
  • controlling elevated cholesterol levels
  • treating mood disorders such as depression
  • physical exercise
  • and what you eat (Mediterranean diet is most recommended)
Additional reversible causes of MCI and Dementia include:
  • drug side effects
  • vitamin and mineral deficiencies (Americans are deficient in minerals. In fact, way back in 1936, the Department of Agriculture told congress that 99% of the population was deficient. Regrettably, there are many more recent studies confirming varying amounts of mineral deficiencies in our diet, mainly due to their depletion in our soil. ) Life's Abundance Minerals and Antioxidant Drink mix can help with your mineral deficiency.
