The Five White Knights of Good Health

According to heart research there are five harmful habits that sets the stage for heart disease. Guess what? They are:
  1. smoking
  2. being inactive
  3. carrying too much weight
  4. poor diet
  5. drinking too much alcohol
These 5 harmful habits also disturb blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. More than is desirable these 5 harmful habits end in either heart attack, stroke, peripheral artery disease, valve problem, aortic aneurysm or heart failure. The damage these 5 harmful habits cause is not limited to cardiovascular system, but extends to the kidneys, bones and brain.



It is never to late to turn over a new leaf. Consider the following Five White Knights to protect your heart, your arteries and the rest of you. You will look better and feel better.
  1. Avoid tobacco as a smoker and also secondhand smoke
  2. Be active. Exercise and physical activity are like the magic bullets against heart disease and other chronic conditions. Any amount of activity is better than none at all. 30 minutes per day is best, and at the minimum 20 minutes per day.
  3. Strive toward a healthy weight. If you carry extra pounds especially around the mid section it is a strain upon the heart and pushes you closer to diabetes.
  4. Liven up your diet. Add fruits and vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fat, good protein from beans, nuts fish and poultry, and herbs and spices. Shy away from processed foods, salt, rapidly digested carbohydrates from white bread, white rice, potatoes, etc., red meat, soda and/or other sugar-sweetened beverages.
  5. Drink alcohol in moderation (if at all). If you drink alcohol, limit your intake to one to two drinks per day for men and no more than one per day for women.
If you follow all 5 healthy behaviors you have built yourself a solid foundation for good health.
