Lower risk of 13 types of cancer may be in your horoscope if you exercise for 150 minutes per week moderately. The activity would include walking or 75 minutes per week of vigorous activity. In this study of 1.44 million adults it showed people who exercised more found to have lower risk for these cancers. This finding gives us all another great reason to strive for the weekly recommendation of moderate-to-vigorous activity. It is important to note the findings were "independent" of several key dietary factors.
This study was from the National Cancer Institute and published in JAMA Internal Medicine. They pooled data from a dozen US and European studies on adults ranging from age 19 to 98. One limitation is that the findings relied on self-reported physical activity and therefore cannot prove cause and effect.
Lower cancer risk still prevalent among those with a smoking history and obesity. The lower cancer risk was for:
- esophageal cancer - 42% (important because researchers noted such tumors are particularly deadly)
- breast cancer - 10%
- colon cancer - 16%
- lung cancer 26%
Other cancers less likely among those exercising were:
- leukemia
- myeloma
- cancers of the liver, kidney, stomach, endometrium, rectum, bladder, and head/neck
Two types actually more common among most physically active were:
- melanoma
- slow-growing prostate tumors
