Choose The Right Kind of Fat

Studies have shown us a diet high in fat is linked to increased risk for:
  • obesity
  • cardiovascular disease
  • stroke
  • various cancers particularly breast cancer colon, ovarian, prostate and possibly pancreatic cancer

Fact is: Not all fats are harmful. In fact, some fats can benefit your health. The key is to choose the right kind of fats and not to consume too many fats overall. You want to eat only the amount of fat to flavor your food and select the healthiest ones.

How do you achieve the right balance?

The best polyunsaturated vegetable oils to use are safflower and canola oil which contain the best balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Other good sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fats that are naturally contained in:
  • fish
  • flaxseed
  • tree nuts
Limit the bad saturated fats that are the primary drivers of raising blood cholesterol levels. The American Heart Associated recommends you limit your intake of saturated fats to no more than seven percent of your total daily calories. Where ae the "bad saturated fats?" These fats naturally occur in foods like meat and poultry and full-fat dairy products. Choose low-fat dairy products, lean cuts of meat and poultry breast to keep your intake down.

Trans fats are another fat you should avoid. Some doctor regard trans fats as the worst of all. Trans fats are usually found in partially hydrogenated vegetable oil you can read on the product label. source: UCLA Division of Geriatrics
