Heartburn is experienced by almost everyone at some point or another. When it is frequent it is more than just a nuisance. Heartburn occurs when acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus and you get that horrible burning sensation.



For years, the remedy for heartburn was Tums. In the mid-1970's drug companies came up with Tagamet, Zantac and Pepcid. In the 1990's they came up with a class of acid reducers called Proton pump inhibitors and are our best treatment for patients who truly have reflux disease or who have erosive esophagitis. PPIs may come with side effects if used long term.

Red Meat Eaters Beware

Through the years scientific research told us red meat eaters have a higher risk for heart disease. We also learned most farm animals are raised in miserable conditions. The land, water, fertilizer, feed grains, and antibiotics used to raise cattle and pigs pollute our air and water and create greenhouse gases.



A year ago, the International Agency for Research on Cancer published a report concluding "red meat probably causes cancer in humans." In addition, processed meat definitely causes cancer.

Do you know what processed meat really is? It is all those tasty things like:

• bacon
• hot dogs
• sausages
• ham
• deli meats

Most of the above mentioned are made from pork and beef and typically cured with sodium nitrite, salt, and sometimes smoke. Experts tells us, however, do not be fooled by the "No Nitrates or Nitrites Added" in large print on packages of Wellshire Dry Rubbed Uncured Pork Bacon and other uncured meats.

There is a disclosure beside those words in tiny print (probably so they hope you won't notice) that says "except for those naturally occurring in sea salt and celery powder." Fact is naturally occurring nitrates or nitrites are no safer than added nitrates or nitrites. Don't blame it on the company. Those words are printed on demand from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that regulates meat and poultry labels.

Be aware that the IARC estimates eating a modest 1 1/2 ounce portion of processed meat per day increases the risk of colon cancer or rectum by 18 percent. (source: Nutrition Action Newsletter October 2016, Volume 43, Number 8)
