Warmer Weather Biking Exercise

Warmer temperatures often entices people to go outdoors for exercise riding bikes, running and walking. Bike riding offers a nice break from walking indoors through the cold months of the year. Some experts say biking puts less stress on your joints than jogging or running. Biking can also give you a sense of "going somewhere else."
It seems there is more research on walking and running for exercise than biking, however, there are a few studies that found people who biked regularly had about 15% fewer heart attacks than did non bikers. Other studies say bicycle riders were less likely to have conditions that raise heart disease risk like high blood pressure, high cholesterol or pre-diabetes when compared to people who used public transit or drove to work. Of course, walkers and runners reap the same health benefits, yet without the sense of "allowing the wind to blow through your hair" as you cruise along on your bike.

Depending upon where you work, riding a bike to work can be an enjoyable way to get there as well as cut your transportation costs to a minimum of bike maintenance.
If you are new to biking, it is best to ride on a paved bike path or in quiet, low-traffic neighborhoods at least until you gain some speed while riding. 
You don't even have to own a bike to go bike riding if you live in an area where bikes are for rent. If you are able to rent a bike, try different ones to find which one fits your needs best.
When I was a kid, we lived most our life next door to a church that had a driveway built all around it. I spent many hours bike riding around and around that church driveway. Neighbors and I also held many bike races in the same area.
Tips for bike riding for exercise:
  1. pay attention to your body
  2. stick to a pace that feels manageable
  3. increase the intensity when you feel ready
  4. always talk to your physician before you begin any kind of exercise routine regardless of whether you venture into the great outdoors, go to a fitness center, or do a workout at home.
