Love Pumpkin? Pumpkins Are Full of Nutrition

Eat more pumpkin! You don't have to wait for the Halloween and Thanksgiving seasons. If you do, you are missing out on a nutritional boost and bargain. Pumpkins are nutrient-dense. They deliver:

  • a modest amount of protein and fiber
  • a mix of essential minerals
  • vitamins C and E
  • and especially beta-carotene that is a form of Vitamin A
  • they are only 49 calories per cup
The original source of pumpkins is from the Americas when colonists learned about them from native tribes. Pumpkins arrived in Europe at about the Shakespeare era. Even then, pumpkin was seen as being good for you and even used to try and treat many ailments including freckles and snake bite.
There is no one food that is considered "most healthy" and containing all the nutrition we need, however, regular consumption of pumpkin should be considered as part of a healthy diet. Don't wait until the holidays to nourish your body with pumpkin.
Nutrition found in one cup of pumpkin:
  • 2 grams of protein
  • 3 grams fiber
  • 12 grams carbohydrates
  • 564 milligrams potassium (more than in one banana and about 1/8 of what you need daily)
  • copper
  • manganese
  • zinc
  • iron
  • selenium
  • magnesium
  • Vitamin C
  • riboflavin
  • Vitamin E
  • 5.125 milligrams of beta carotene
One cup of cooked pumpkin with the beta carotene may reduce:
  • risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women (especially those at higher risk)
  • risk of ovarian cancer
  • may help arthritis from getting worse
  • beta carotene from food improves physical performance and strength in older people
Pumpkin is also rich in:
  • lutein and zeaxanthin which improves eye health and may guard against cataracts and age-related macular degeneration

To ensure a balance between getting just enough and not overdoing it, we formulated our Life’s Abundance Multivitamin. This unique supplement provides you with a focused approach to daily wellness. That’s important because instead of bombarding your body with an endless list of vitamins and minerals, like other dietary supplements, we included only the nutrients you need for optimal health and nothing you don’t. Plus the proprietary spice blend and black pepper fruit extract in this supplement, supply you with an additional nutrition boost.
This multivitamin supplement is in vegan-friendly, veggie capsules that do not contain magnesium stearate. The capsules are made from cellulose, which not only helps protect sensitive ingredients but also breaks down and delivers nutrients more quickly than the compressed tablets you can find on store shelves.

Hot Cocoa May Prove to Give You More Brain Power

We are entering to the summer season in my area of the world, however, it won't be long until the relaxing cool and cold season arrives again. Be prepared with some hot cocoa ready to go to help boost your brain power. A clinical trial conducted by Mars chocolate-maker reports older adults with mild cognitive impairment improved their scores on some mental tests when they consumed more cocoa flavanols. Cocoa flavanols are the antioxidant compounds in dark chocolate's heart health benefits. Evidently they these same flavanols are found in cocoa.

The study author Giovambattista Desideri, PhD said for the first time it is found that regular cocoa flavanol consumption rings a positive note on cognitive function in older adults with early memory decline. More important is that the improvements in cognitive function was seen over a relatively short period of time, so it does not take years and years of regular drinking hot cocoa to achieve positive results. It is noted though "regular" consumption of the cocoa flavanols reaps the best results.
Improvements noted were:
  • in blood pressure
  • plasma glucose and insulin resistance improved
Researchers note it is unclear whether these benefits in cognition are a direct consequence of cocoa flavanols or a secondary effect of general improvements in cardiovascular function. The findings do indicate promise of improved cognitive health with a few novel dietary changes. source: Tufts University Health Newsletters
