Diabetes - A lucrative disease | DW Documentary

In our modern consumer society, Type 2 diabetes has become a widespread disease. Companies are developing drugs that are increasingly expensive, but not necessarily more effective. Health authorities are powerless. Diabetes is spreading rapidly, all over the world. The disease destroys lives and puts a strain on public budgets. The UN is calling on governments to take action. Diabetes is proof that modern societies are incapable of adequately treating chronic disease. It affects around 430 million people worldwide, with two main metabolic disorders falling under the name diabetes. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease that must be treated with lifelong doses of insulin, while type 2 can develop when a person’s diet is too high in fat and sugar and they do not engage in enough physical activity. see more in video below

Obesity and corporate greed | DW Documentary

Doctors predict that by 2030, half of the world's population will be overweight or obese. An epidemic of obesity is causing a rapid rise in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. It's becoming the biggest health challenge worldwide. Why has no country managed to stop this epidemic? The food industry and government authorities say it's due to a lack of individual self-discipline. Is this true? Or is it the result of collective failure -- a symptom of a liberal society that abhors obesity, yet produces people who are overweight. Is society itself to blame for this situation? Around the world, politicians, priests, doctors, and average people are standing up to multinational food corporations. They want to take back control of their nutrition and their bodies -- and they're using the law, scientific evidence, and political activism to correct the claim that people who are obese have only themselves to blame. These critics focus on sugary drinks that can be as addictive as some hard drugs; misleading advertising directed at children and low-income people; governments that turn a blind eye to junk-food companies; and lobbying that pushes the limits of legality. HEALTH BENEFITS OF FLAX SEEDS

Long before flaxseed was the superseed we know it as today, it was primarily used to create textiles. These days, of course, it’s considered a staple in the nutrition world and is known for being an excellent source of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. Flax, also known as common flax or linseed, is a flowering plant. It is cultivated as a food and fiber crop in regions of the world with temperate climates. Flax seeds are good sources of many nutrients. Their health benefits are mainly due to their content of omega-3 fats, lignans and fiber. see more in video below

Low Carb, Low Calorie, No Sugar Crockpot Barbecue Chicken

I have always been a big fan of barbecue chicken. I use to bake it in the oven until I discovered how much better it was made in a crockpot. This is my own recipe. You can add onions and green peppers to the pot, or any other vegetables you want to add, which I plan to do in the future. For this first try though I just made it with barbecue sauce (found at Wal-mart) and chicken thighs.

I used:

G Hughes Smokehouse Sugar Free BBQ Sauce Sweet and Spicy (18 ounce) bottle

Chicken Thighs

Put the chicken in pot and pour over the BBQ sauce as much as desired. I used the entire bottle this first time, but I think I can make this sauce go further and just use half the bottle next time.

Put crockpot on high for 5 hours, which is equal to 10 hours on low. 5 hours on High worked fine for mine. Chicken was done and juicy.

I have to measure out my food into 2 ounces of chicken, which is not much, but is a "powerfuel" serving on my Nutrisystem Flex diet plan. I measured the 2 ounces using a kitchen scale by cutting off the chicken from the bones and placed in separate bowls having 2 ounces each. I placed about 1 tablespoon of the barbecue sauce in each serving which for me made it perfect to taste. This system made me 8 servings. I used no salt. The taste was perfect without salt.

This barbecue sauce is 10 calories per serving. A serving is 2 tablespoons, so each of my servings had only 5 calories as I used only one tablespoon per serving. There is no fat in the sauce, no cholesterol in the sauce, 200 mg sodium, which is probably why I did not have to use salt, 0 sugar, and 2 g carbs in each serving. I am not sure if this sodium content is high or not. I was looking for low calorie, low carb and no sugar, so this works for me at this time.

And of course if you are not watching your calories and portion control you can serve to others bigger servings.

It really is very good! I was surprised. I liked it better than any other barbecue sauce used with chicken. Usually I have to try several products to find a winner. I was shocked that this was so good on the very first try. Such a simple way to get some animal protein in the diet.

Obesity is a Killer!

In many ways, when we are overweight, our every day life suffers plus the long term effects of obesity is life shortening.

When I am controlling my weight like I am doing now, I feel more in control of all my life. Eating the wrong things and mainly for "emotional" reasons is why I became obese. It is like being an alcoholic but you are addicted to the emotional roller coaster of eating tasty foods instead. I am in remission!

Nutrisystem is the diet plan for me. It works for me. I am down from 190 pounds to 171 pounds and I plan on going down to 120 to 130, which is a healthy weight for my height, age and body build.

Nutrisystem has several different plans. I started out on the 5 day plan. I am now on the 3 day plan. You eat Nutrisystem foods for 3 days and then the rest of the time you eat "flex meals" consisting of very easy to follow lists of power fuels and smart carbs plus vegetables. IT SIMPLY WORKS.

In my first shipment I received a leaflet explaining what to eat on the flex meal days comparable to the Nutrisystem foods but foods I can buy in the grocery. They have a list of all the power fuels, smart carbs and vegetables in which you can choose to eat 6 meals a day. I am eating more on this diet than I was eating before this diet. The trick is eating the "right kind of food combinations" at the same times every day amounting to a calorie deficit they figure out for you electronically online when you join their program. It simply is the easiest the way to lose weight and learn how to eat once you have lost the weight to keep it off.

It is also important to exercise at least 30 minutes per day.
