Feed the Brain and Uplift the Spirits

Just being a human makes us all creatures of habit. Once we form a habit, we really despise to change that habit. Of course good habits are helpful to us and need not to change. On the flip side of things, research suggests we still need to do things differently every now and then. It helps boost brain health and uplifts our spirits. As we open our self up to new cognitive activities it is also possible to stave off certain forms of dementia. 

Here are some tips on how to break out of the routines we don't need to keep.
Break the Unnecessary Routines keeping you in a rut. Ongoing research tells us doing things by habit or routine requires less brain juice than switching things around and doing something differently. The brain goes into a compensation state and crazily tries to create new pathways. It says to you, "what is happening here." He or she is surely doing something different, let us make some new roads, looks like he or she is traveling on a different path than yesterday. 
For example, if you take the same route to work every day, just try mixing things up a bit and drive a different way instead. If you always go to the same grocery store, shop somewhere else tomorrow. Use a different hand to brush your teeth. Believe it or not, our brain scientists tell us even the slightest kind of changes can be beneficial to brain health as it all leads to a rapid and significant expansion of parts of the cortex making cells stronger and more resistant to the effects of aging. We are creating better brain health and uplifting our spirits at the same time.

New Smells create new routines. Try a new recipe every week. I love crock pot cooking and part of my love for it stems from the wonderful, comforting smells. I suppose my brain is creating comforting pathway brain cells! Connecting smells to emotional meanings is said to stimulate different areas of the brain and naturally produces brain cell nutrients that improve memory. Routinely change your candles and enjoy how your mood changes with different candle scents.
Avoid Binge Watching your cell phone or T.V. I cannot believe how many people I see with their heads in a cell phone, doing what I wonder, well playing games, texting, and on the social sites, some listen to music. 
Studies show binge watching your cell phone, computer or T.V. is causing higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression. 
Remember what Elvis did when he got mad at someone on his T.V.? Must have been due to binge watching T.V. as I know he watched a lot of T.V. with his Memphis Mafia and girlfriends/wives. Something or someone came on his T.V. he didn't like, I guess his brain just kicked into a state of anxiety, he pulled out his gun wherever he had one hid, (in his boot, his back pocket, front pockets) and shot the T.V. to death. No problem. The T.V. was quickly replaced by one of his staff people. Then people wondered why Elvis did that. Well....he was stressed while binge watching T.V. It was said Elvis did everything to excess which created more stress for him than needed.
Mental Stimulation from new hobbies or an old hobby done in a different place or way, doing crossword puzzles or learning anything NEW stimulates the brain to create new pathways and brain cells. Researchers say some of the best food for your brain is using creative thinking and manual dexterity while drawing, painting, creating a new purse, blanket, or garment in crochet or knit, making jewelry, etc.
Lifestyle Changes such as stop smoking or don't start, don't drink to excess, exercise regularly, maintain a good blood pressure, get plenty of sleep, keeping your blood sugar and cholesterol levels in check can all have dramatic effects on brain health. If you are not paying attention to these things it is time to start.

Pumpkin Spice Protein Truffles

Nothing says Halloween is just around the corner like the arrival of pumpkin season. 

This October, instead of stocking up brightly colored, high-fructose-corn-syrup concoctions that can cause repeated sugar crashes that leave you feeling like an empty gourd, why not try an entirely new fall delicacy using pumpkin purée? 
This no-fuss, no-bake recipe will help banish the hobgoblins of low-blood sugar and in-between-meal cravings. And the perfectly balanced blend of spices will instantly transport you to fall memories of years past.
INGREDIENTS
1 1/4 cup oats
½ cup pumpkin purée
¼ cup coconut palm sugar
2 Tbsp. Life’s Abundance Vanilla Plant Protein
2 Tbsp. maple syrup
1 tsp. pumpkin spice
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Unsweetened desiccated coconut or cinnamon to coat
DIRECTIONS
1. In a food processor or high-speed blender, pulse oats until a fine powder is achieved.
2. In a medium bowl, combine oat powder with remaining dry ingredients.
3. Fold in wet ingredients until evenly combined. The batter should be firm with just enough moisture to allow the coconut coating to stick (next step).
4. Use hands or a 1-inch scoop to make small dough balls. Roll balls until outside is smooth, coating in chopped coconut, cinnamon or topping of choice.
5. Store refrigerated in an airtight container for up to a week … even though they’ll never last that long because they’re just too darn delicious!
This recipe yields approximately two dozen 1-inch bites. Enjoy!
