Is Walking as Good for You as Running?

Walking is definitely the most convenient exercise. You can walk just about anywhere with no special kind of equipment except for a good pair of walking shoes, which are a must. But can you get the same health benefits from walking as running?
Shoes and Fruit (p365 20)
Researchers tell us, you can reap the same health benefits from walking as running as long as you walk for a longer time. The health benefits you will reap are:
  • reduced risks of  high blood pressure
  • unhealthy cholesterol levels
  • diabetes
  • coronary heart disease
Walking may be an exercise people will stick with the most when compared to running. For some of us, it is just not feasible to take up a running program. It is good news to hear walking is just as healthy, so long as you walk for longer periods of time to expend the same amount of energy as you would from running. Walking might require double the minutes to achieve the same benefits as vigorously running. The distance would be the same, it just takes longer to walk each mile than to run each mile. You will burn roughly the same amount of calories.

Start small and increase gradually. You might have to force yourself to get up and moving, but once you get started, you will be glad you did. The benefits far outweigh the extra effort you have to put into formal walking for purposes of exercise. I always say as well, invest in some good stretches after a good walk to keep you flexible and to keep you from getting sore muscles. Be sure to stay hydrated.
Trade those sugary sports and energy drinks for the Life's Abundance Minerals and Antioxidant drinks:
Americans are deficient in minerals. In fact, way back in 1936, the Department of Agriculture told congress that 99% of the population was deficient. Regrettably, there are many more recent studies confirming varying amounts of mineral deficiencies in our diet, mainly due to their depletion in our soil.
We need minerals! Vitamins cannot work properly without them and they are absolutely vital to maintain our mental and physical well being. Since the body cannot manufacture minerals, they must come from our diet.
Life’s Abundance Minerals & Antioxidants drink mix is a delicious way to supplement your diet.
This unique mix is made with a variety of freshly harvested sea vegetables and contains approximately 74-plant based, naturally chelated, trace minerals. For an additional nutritional boost, it also contains antioxidants from 11 nutrient-rich super fruits like acai, cranberry, goji, maqui and pomegranate ... making this a high ORAC beverage blend. ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity and it's a way of measuring the antioxidant level, which is important because antioxidants are essential to good health.
Unlike many liquid water enhancers made from chemicals, our formula is made with coconut water and aloe vera and it does not contain any added sugar, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. The organic coconut water replaces electrolytes plus it is alkalizing, which helps to restore a natural pH balance in the body and counters the effects of an acidic diet.
Instead of giving you a sugar crash like most other “health” drinks, our Minerals & Antioxidants mix gives you sustained energy.
Give hydration a boost with Life’s Abundance Minerals & Antioxidants. In two delicious flavors, Cherry and Tropical Fruit, pour into a water bottle for a convenient, go-anywhere nutritious drink. Take it to the gym or give a bottle to the kids … it’s delicious, refreshing and nourishing!

Pick the Best Fruits for Diabetes

A large study reveals choosing whole fruit rather than fruit juice might significantly reduce your risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The study also tells us the kind of fruit you pick is better than others in protecting you against diabetes. Those fruits are:
Dish of blueberries
  • blueberries
  • grapes
  • apples
  • pears
This research was conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women's Hospital. They analyzed diet and diabetes risk among more than 180,000 health professionals. In the beginning of this study participants were free of diabetes. During the years of follow-up, 6.5% developed the disease.
Abhar-iran
Final conclusion published in BMJ was:
  • eating 3 servings of whole fruit in place of 3 servings of juice per week does reduce diabetes risk by 7%
  • cantaloupe consumption was linked to slightly higher risk
  • blueberries were most strongly associated with reduced risk of developing diabetes, grapes was runner up, then apples, pears, bananas, and grapefruit
    Malus Goldrenette F. v. Berlepsch
  • peaches, plums, prunes, apricots, oranges, strawberries no difference in risk
  • cantaloupe had a 10% HIGHER risk
Researchers felt the difference in fruit risk could be due to differences in fiber content, antioxidants or other phytochemicals. These findings do not mean you should eat only blueberries and grapes. Some fruits are higher in other nutrients and the phytochemicals they contain will vary. For example:
  • strawberries are high in Vitamin C
  • cantaloupe is high in beta-carotene

Eating whole fruit is always more nutritious than drinking fruit juice.
