Is "Cough CPR" an Appropriate Treatment for Heart Attack?

Here is some "incorrect" information that has been circulating around the internet for almost 20 years:

There are many people who survive heart attacks. The downside is a heart attack can cause lasting and serious heart damage. Sometimes the heart attack triggers cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest is a condition in which the heart goes into a very fast, abnormal rhythm (arrhythmia) or stops beating altogether. When cardiac arrest occurs, the person loses consciousness within seconds. Therefore, to start coughing would be impossible if the person actually goes into cardiac arrest. 

On the flip side of this, forceful coughing increases pressure in the chest and helps maintain blood flow. A conscious, responsive person who coughs forcefully and repeatedly might be able to keep enough blood flowing to the brain to remain conscious for a minute or two  until the arrhythmia is treated. This is what has been mislabeled "cough CPR." It is not a form of traditional or professional cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Doctors do sometimes ask their patients to cough if an arrhythmia, particularly a slow heart rate, occurs during a heart catheterization.

The professional recommended form of CPR involves pushing hard and fast on the center of the chest with an automated external defibrillator emergency personnel will bring with them. These devices are also found in public places, fitness centers, sports arenas, airports and train stations.

Simple steps to follow if you think you are having a heart attack:

1. call 911
2. chew one regular-strength aspirin or 4 low-dose 81-mg aspirins
3. lie down

If you think you are going to pass out, no harm is done trying to forceful cough to terminate a possible arrhythmia.
