Munching on Nuts Every Day is an Easy Way to Protect Your Heart

Munch on a small handful of nuts every day to help protect your heart. One way to eat a heart-friendly diet and avoid putting on weight is to substitute a cup of pretzels or potato chips for a quarter-cup of mixed nuts. Nuts are always the smart snack choice. Nuts provide a good source of protein, healthy unsaturated fats and fiber that will fill you up or curb that sudden hunger twinge. Eat a handful of nuts before a regular meal and you will feel fuller, thus avoiding eating too much otherwise.
Fancy raw mixed nuts macro
Research shows regular nut eaters are less likely to die of any cause, particularly heart disease, than people who rarely eat nuts.
Why are nuts good for heart health? They are full of healthy unsaturated fats, contain fiber, vitamins, minerals and other substances with possible heart protection effects. Research shows eating nuts seem to:
  • lower artery-damaging LDL cholesterol
  • raise beneficial HDL cholesterol
  • lower blood pressure
  • diminish blood pressure responses to stress
The above positive effects hold true for a variety of nuts even peanuts which are technically legumes instead of nuts. There is a variety of nuts to choose from that include:
  • almonds
  • walnuts
  • hazelnuts
  • pecans
  • pistachios
  • cashews (my favorite)
  • Brazil nuts
Nuts are easy to take along anywhere you go. Tuck a plastic bag of them into your purse or pocket. Throughout the day:
  • spread nut butter on morning toast instead of using butter
  • sprinkle chopped nuts on cereal or yogurt
  • toss nuts into a salad or stir-fry
  • top fruit with nuts
  • eat a handful of nuts while waiting "for anything"

Help Protect Your Heart with Plant Based Diets

What is a plant-based diet? It is NOT a vegetarian diet. Vegetarian diets is an eating pattern that leaves out some or all foods that come from animals. A plant-based diet does not necessarily leave out all animal-derived foods. In a plant-based diet the main focus is on:

    Marketvegetables

    • plants
    • grains
    • vegetables
    • fruits
    • legumes (dried beans and peanuts)
    • nuts
However, a plant-based diet includes "limited" amounts of fish, meat, poultry and dairy products. I think most of us realize eating a lot of red meat has downsides. Research shows the health benefits of plant-based diets helps fuel the vegcentric movement now trending in upscale restaurants. We find that "plant-based" entrees are at the center of plates instead of a chunk of meat.

As consumers we need to be aware that not all plant-based foods are equally healthy. The healthy plant-based foods include:

    • whole grains like brown rice and steel-cut oats
While at the same time a cupcake also is plant-based having the two main ingredients as white flour and sugar. This is also true for a large number of other "less-healthy" plant-based foods such as:

    • white rice
    • white bread
    • sugar-sweetened beverages
According to research data people who follow a plant-based diet rich in healthier plant-based foods were less likely to be diagnosed with heart disease. By contrast, people whose diets contained less healthy plant foods were more likely to develop heart disease.

Bottom line or moral to the story of good heart health NOW is there is no need to become a vegan and cut out all animal-based foods. Low-fat dairy products such as plain yogurt remains good sources of protein and calcium. If you eat red or processed meat, LIMIT yourself to a few servings per month especially since evidence has linked red or processed meats to a higher risk of both heart disease and cancer.

More important is to now FOCUS on the quality of carbohydrates, choose:

    • whole-grain bread instead of white bread
    • brown rice instead of white rice
    • oatmeal instead of cornflakes or other refined-grain breakfast cereals.
    • trade sodas and other sugary beverages for flavored water (without sugar) (source: Harvard Heart Letter)

    • Add Life's Abundance Minerals and Antioxidant drink instead of the popular sports drinks to your daily diet
Life's Abundance Minerals and Antioxidants Drink Mix

This drink has become a staple in my diet. It mixes easily with 16 ounces of water and both flavors of cherry or tropical is delicious, much more tasty than any sports drink I ever drank. This drink contains:

    74 plant derived trace minerals

  • Antioxidants from 11 super fruits
  • Over 17,775 ORAC units a serving
  • Coconut water & aloe vera

  • Non GMO

  • Gluten free
  • Vegan
  • Soy free
  • Dairy free
  • Naturally flavored
  • No added sugar
  • No artificial flavors
  • No artificial colors
  • No artificial preservatives

  • Americans are deficient in minerals. In fact, way back in 1936, the Department of Agriculture told congress that 99% of the population was deficient. Regrettably, there are many more recent studies confirming varying amounts of mineral deficiencies in our diet, mainly due to their depletion in our soil.

We need minerals! Vitamins cannot work properly without them and they are absolutely vital to maintain our mental and physical well being. Since the body cannot manufacture minerals, they must come from our diet.

Life’s Abundance Minerals & Antioxidants drink mix is a delicious way to supplement your diet.

This unique mix is made with a variety of freshly harvested sea vegetables and contains approximately 74-plant based, naturally chelated, trace minerals. For an additional nutritional boost, it also contains antioxidants from 11 nutrient-rich super fruits like acai, cranberry, goji, maqui and pomegranate ... making this a high ORAC beverage blend. ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity and it's a way of measuring the antioxidant level, which is important because antioxidants are essential to good health.

Unlike many liquid water enhancers made from chemicals, our formula is made with coconut water and aloe vera and it does not contain any added sugar, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. The organic coconut water replaces electrolytes plus it is alkalizing, which helps to restore a natural pH balance in the body and counters the effects of an acidic diet.

Instead of giving you a sugar crash like most other “health” drinks, our Minerals & Antioxidants mix gives you sustained energy.

Give hydration a boost with Life’s Abundance Minerals & Antioxidants. In two delicious flavors, Cherry and Tropical Fruit, pour into a water bottle for a convenient, go-anywhere nutritious drink. Take it to the gym or give a bottle to the kids … it’s delicious, refreshing and nourishing!

And....to add more plant based foods to your daily diet, use Life's Abundance Plant Protein Drink Mix. You can mix this with 8 ounces of water and drink one per day. If you include both of these drinks into your daily diet you also increase your recommended amounts of 8 glasses of water per day. However, I like mixing the Plant Protein Powder with low fat milk for a silky smooth tasting shake instead of using water. This plant protein drink mix comes in chocolate and vanilla flavor. I am featuring the chocolate flavor here:

Eat More Sweet Potatoes for an Unsurpassed Source of Beta-Carotene

Experts tell us sweet potatoes has superior ability to raise our blood levels of vitamin A. You may derive more nutritional benefits from sweet potatoes if you steam or boil as your cooking method. Cut sweet potatoes into 1/2 inch slices and quick steam them for 7 minutes to really bring out their great flavor and maximize nutritional value.

    Ipomoea batatas 006

Sweet potatoes provide some surprising health benefits. Among the benefits are:

    • antioxidants
    • anti-inflammatory nutrients
    • blood sugar regulating nutrients
Some studies reveal sweet potatoes are highly effective in providing school age children with sizable amounts of daily vitamin A. One key benefit of including sweet potatoes in our daily diets is that this vegetable is available in many countries on a year-round basis.

Sweet potatoes also have a tremendous ability of providing beta-carotene elevating them to the state of being one of our superfood sources. Beta-carotene is a key antioxidant to good health. Beta-carotene is only the beginning of the sweet potato's story of providing powerful antioxidants.

In studies regarding sweet potatoes ability to stand against inflammation there is also promising results. Sweet potatoes can help us ward off unwanted inflammation-related health problems.

We often think of sweet potatoes being a staple for Thanksgiving traditional meals. We need to get into the routine of including as a staple throughout the entire year. They are some of the most nutritious vegetables around. They are usually available year round, however, most in season in November and December, which might be why we only think of eating them during the holiday season.

If you are looking for even more healthy ways to consume the recommended 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, try the Life's Abundance Greens Blend. There is only 25 calories per serving.

Eat More Beans to Help Lower Cholesterol

Try eating one-half cup of cooked dry beans every day to help lower total cholesterol levels. Beans are a good source of fiber and protein as well. An Agricultural Research Service study in North Dakota added to the already growing body of evidence that beans are healthy for the heart.

The Agriculture Research Service is the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s main scientific research agency. Lead authors for the study in North Dakota were chemist Philip Reeves and nutritionist John Finley. The study was conducted at the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

    Pinto bean

A lipid profile provides a complete cholesterol count based on blood tests and is the biomarker for the risk of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is considered to be a lifestyle-related disease. Positives changes in exercise and diet that improves the cholesterol profiles is considered to benefit the cardiovascular system.

There were 80 volunteers in this study. Ages were 18 to 55 years. Half of the volunteers were healthy and half had at least two symptoms that signaled a risk for cardiovascular disease. The study lasted for 12 weeks. Half of the group was randomly selected to eat one-half cup of cooked dry pinto beans daily along with a regular daily diet. The other half ate a replacement serving of chicken soup instead of the pinto beans. Results were:

    • The healthy ones as well as those with symptoms, who ate pinto beans, saw a reduction in their cholesterol levels
    • Findings confirm earlier studies that showed eating beans lowers cholesterol levels
    • Why this is true requires further study

A new line of germplasm named “ABC-Weihing” is available for breeding high-yielding kinds of great northern beans that resist common bacterial blight. Bacterial blight is an endemic disease affecting bean crops east of the U.S. Continental Divide.

The ABC-Weihing was developed by Miklas and Carlos Urrea, University of Nebraska bean breeders, using marker-assisted selection. Detailed information on ABC-Weihing will be in an upcoming issue of “Crop Science.”

Let's Talk About Mushrooms and Their Health Benefits

Mushrooms are less colorful than other fruits and vegetables and are often overlooked for their nutritional value as well.

    ChampignonMushroom

Mushrooms are actually very nutrient dense providing a range of many essential minerals, nutrients and antioxidants that include:

    • Copper
    • B vitamins
    • Riboflavin
    • Niacin
    • Pantothenic acid
    • Antioxidants like selenium and ergothioneine

White button mushrooms are an unrecognized source of vitamin D. One serving of 4 to 5 button mushrooms provides 15 IU of vitamin D.

Many Americans do not get enough potassium. Mushrooms have almost 300 milligrams of potassium in each serving. The other good news about mushrooms is that one serving has only 20 calories and zero grams of fat.

Of all the fruits and vegetables, mushrooms leads as a source of the mineral selenium. Selenium forms an antioxidant in the body that may help protect cells from damage. Chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease may be the result of cellular damage. There are long-term studies going on currently to investigate the potential role of selenium in cancer prevention.

Another natural antioxidant found in mushrooms is ergothioneine. One serving contains about 3 to 4 milligrams of ergothioneine.

What are some easy ways to include mushrooms in our diet?

    • Slice and sauté white button mushroom and sprinkle on top of a pizza, or toss into pasta or wrap in a quesadilla
    • Combine brown (crimini) mushrooms with beef, poultry or vegetable dishes
    • Add enoki mushrooms to sandwiches or soups
    • Maitakes have a unique aroma and woodsy flavor, add them to a main dish or side dish meal
    • Heated shiitakes provide richness and texture in vegetable dishes and meat-based dishes
    How do you select mushrooms?
    • Purchase mushrooms that are firm and have a fresh, smooth appearance
    • Check to see that the surfaces are “dry,” but not “dried out”
    • Mushrooms should appear plump
    • A closed veil under the cap indicates a delicate flavor
    • A open veil and exposed gills mean a richer flavor
    How should you store mushrooms?
    • Refrigerate mushrooms in the original package for up to a week
    • After opening, store mushrooms in a paper bag for longer shelf-life
    • Avoid storing opened mushrooms in airtight containers. Air tight containers will cause condensation and hasten spoilage.
    • Never freeze fresh mushroom
    • Frozen sautéed mushrooms will keep for up to a month

    How do you clean mushrooms?

    • Brush off dirt with a damp paper towel or fingers
    • Rinse fresh mushrooms briefly under running water and pat dry with a paper towel
    • Never soak mushrooms
    • Trim the end of the stem before using

    Is Juicing Right for You?

Home Juicing has become popular recently. Is it good for you? Some people may like to juice due to recent trends of "juice cleansing," "juice detoxing" or "juicing to lose weight."

    Marketvegetables

According to dietary guidelines for Americans 2010, reports say most Americans over the age of four years are not eating enough fruits and vegetables and do not get enough dietary fiber and other important minerals such as folate, potassium, magnesium or vitamins A, C, and K in their diet. Fruits and vegetables are also a great source of folate important for women who may become pregnant.

Juicing is one way to add more fruits and/or veggies into your daily diet. The DGA recommends the majority of fruit intake come from whole fruits that include canned, frozen and dried forms. Juicing is one way to increase your nutrient intake and take in a variety of fruits and vegetables that you may not normally eat such as kale and spinach.

You should NEVER rely on juicing as your sole source of fruit or vegetable intake. You also need to watch out for extra sugar intake. Some juicing recipes include added sugars like sugar, honey, maple syrup or molasses. Most Americans today need to reduce intake of added sugars. To avoid the extra sugar, choose juicing recipes that do not include these ingredients or use non-caloric sweeteners instead.

Juicing alone will NOT provide all the nutrients you need daily. Juicing can be a good way to introduce new fruits and vegetables into your diet, but a diet containing only the nutrients from fruits and vegetables is missing major nutrients. For example, protein and fat will need to be obtained from other foods. Vitamin D, Calcium and iron will also need to be in the diet from other sources of food. When you remove the skin and pulp to create juicing recipes you also loose a fair amount of fiber.

If you choose to juice, be sure to incorporate it into a healthy eating plan that includes foods from a variety of sources such as:

    • whole grains
    • fat free or low-fat milk and milk products
    • protein foods
Also, there are differences between a juice and a smoothie. A smoothie typically contains fruits and/or vegetables as well as other ingredients such as milk, yogurt or protein powder.

A smoothie often contains many different ingredients that may include:

    • flaxseed
    • green tea
    • kefir
    • herbs
    • and more
Smoothies are another "option" of increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Juicing on the other hand typically includes just the fruit and/or vegetable that has been made into a liquid form. Some juicers remove fiber from the whole fruit or vegetable, which in turn, removes an important nutrient. Many Americans need more fiber in their diets.

Juicing does not necessarily help you lose weight. The finished product may contain considerable amounts of calories. To maintain body weight, you have to "burn" the same amount of calories that you consume. If you take in more calories than you use, this leads to weight gain.

You should always talk to your doctor before juicing especially if you have diabetes or kidney disease. You may need to limit or monitor your intake of certain nutrients such as carbohydrates, potassium or phosphorous. Adding certain fruits or vegetables may not be recommended.

Does juicing detoxify your body? To date, there is no evidence that juicing is a detox solution.

Juicing machines can also be expensive. (source: https://www.nutrition.gov/subject/shopping-cooking-meal-planning/juicing-101)

If you like the idea of juicing, you might also like the Life's Abundance Greens Blend Supplement to add to your already healthy eating diet. Life's Abundance Greens Blend mixes well with 8 ounces of water in a shaker bottle. You have no need to buy an expensive juicer. Plus you will be taking in nutrients you normally might not even think of to eat or have readily available to you. Our Greens Blend is also low in calories. You don't have to worry about taking in extra sugar and calories.

Our Greens Blend nourishes your body with a blend of raw, certified-organic grasses plus certified, organic mushrooms.

Our organic raw greens are grown in glacial soil and cut at peak harvest before the jointing stage, so you're getting the best quality greens. Because they are raw, they retain more nutrients than cooked greens.

To boost this formula’s nutrient value, we added a certified organic blend of reishi, maitake, and shitake mushrooms to provide a vegetarian source of iron and B vitamins, and also a great source of phytonutrients and antioxidants.

Life’s Abundance Greens Blend has a delicious-yet-subtle berry flavor and silky smooth texture. It mixes easily with water or into your favorite smoothie. It is one of the best tasting GMO-free greens blends on the market and leaves no "grassy" aftertaste.

At only 25 calories per serving, this nutrient dense supplement is a simple way to help you consume the recommended 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. As always, before you make changes to your diet or add supplements, please consult with your personal physician first.
