Sharpen Your Memory, Reduce Stress and Improve Sleep

Common herbs and spices used in cakes, cookies, breads and favorite savory dishes are:

  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg

  • cardamom
Cinnamon comes from the bark of a tree native to Southeast Asia. Research shows us cinnamon definitely has an antioxidant, antidiabetic and antibacterial properties. The brain benefits from cinnamon by:

  • reducing inflammation
  • improving memory
  • increasing attention span
  • enhancing cognitive processing

I use Ceylon cinnamon, one teaspoon in my oatmeal every day. One teaspoon per day is about all you should use. You can sprinkle cinnamon in your coffee, add it to fresh fruit or enjoy it on a cinnamon bun. Ceylon cinnamon is one of my favorite spices.

Nutmeg grows on one type of evergreen indigenous to Indonesia. Nutmeg has been found to:
  • boost mood
  • relieve pain
  • relax blood vessels
  • lower blood pressure
  • according to some research nutmeg may help slow cognitive decline in people with Alzheimer's disease and promote recovery of brain tissue following a stroke
You can sprinkle nutmeg in warm milk as an aid to help induce sleep. Nutmeg is a common ingredient in many baked goods. You can add it to egg dishes, casseroles and even burgers. It is good sprinkled on brown rice.
Cloves are from the dried flower buds of the evergreen clove tree native to Indonesia. It has been proven cloves are loaded with antioxidant power. Cloves are:
  • a natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent
  • a local anesthetic
  • antifungal properties
Add cloves to cooked grains, bean soups, and chili, applesauce, smoothies and cooked cereals.
Ginger is made from the root of the ginger plant. Ginger has been shown:
  • to be an effective pain reliever
  • helps reduce nausea
  • helps control inflammation
  • counters the activities of cell-damaging free radicals
  • acts as a blood thinner
  • protects brain cells from deterioration associated with Alzheimer's
  • improves working memory and attention

Use ginger in salad dressings and marinades. Add ginger to squash, sweet potatoes and green beans. Add ginger powder to baked goods, tea or fruit smoothies. I use 1/4 tsp. of ginger root powder in one cup of warm water, one fresh squeezed lemon, 1 tsp. of raw honey as my first drink every day. It is an amazing wake up, settle the stomach drink to start the day.
Cardamon is related to ginger and turmeric and has been shown to have antibacterial properties that help protect brain cells from free radical damage. Brew coffee or tea with cardamom. Add it to stews or soups. Sprinkle it onto batters and dough for tastier baked goods. Try it in smoothies and hot breakfast cereals. (source: Harvard Health)

The Diabetes and Heart Disease Connection

Research data from the Framingham Heart Study revealed to us that having diabetes greatly increased a person's chances of developing heart disease. Since this study, scientists learned more about how Diabetes and Heart Disease interacts. As of 2017, scientists tell us two-thirds of people with diabetes eventually die of heart disease or stroke.



Diabetes causes chronic inflammation and high levels of blood sugar. Both these conditions injure the walls of the arteries and makes them more prone to developing atherosclerosis. Other conditions elevated blood sugar can cause are:
  • stiffens the arteries so they don't expand as well
  • makes blood platelets stickier and more likely to form blood clots
  • diabetes can also cause scar tissue to form in the heart muscle
How do we lower the risks?
  • stop smoking
  • lose weight
  • keep moving in physical activities ideally in sessions of 45 minutes to an hour five times per week
  • eat a heart-healthy daily diet you can keep eating over many years
  • people with diabetes can reduce cardiac risk with intensive doses of statin to lower blood cholesterol
  • so far as blood sugar control, research is showing this is more an individualized treatment based upon the person's age and other medical conditions

Fiber Rich Foods Fosters Good Heart Health

Why is it the experts say most Americans do not get enough fiber in their daily diets? If you follow health online or in print, you most likely read and hear this same thing. Eat more fiber. Fiber helps you to stay more regular, and now it is fiber even promotes good heart health, not just any old fiber though. It is best to get our fiber from whole-grain foods, which is health information dating back to the 1970's and not anything new to any of us. Eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread. Eat steel cut oats instead of regular oats and so on and so forth.

In 2002, the Institute of Medicine set recommendations for daily fiber intake:
  • men up to age 50, (38 grams of fiber per day) after age 50, (30 grams fiber per day)
  • women to age 50, (25 grams) after age 50 (21 grams)
Most Americans consume about 16 grams of fiber per day so says Harvard Heart health professionals. Studies done at Harvard Medical School reveal a fiber shortage in our diets points to a connection with heart disease. Also, people who have diets high in fiber are less likely to have problems like metabolic syndrome that can come before diabetes. This condition is marked by too much belly fat, high triglycerides, low beneficial HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and high blood sugar, which all combined, increases a person's chances of developing diabetes, heart disease, and having a stroke.

Well...I know I have too much belly fat, yet mine might just be a little bit muscle (I am hoping). I tend to have high blood sugar, but not to the point as of yet for treatment. On the positive side for me is my blood pressure remains normal and I attribute this a lot to a regular exercise program because I probably do not get enough daily fiber.

There are two types of fiber. The insoluble fiber is found in foods like:
  • whole grains
  • wheat cereals
  • vegetables such as carrots, celery and tomatoes

The soluble fiber is found in foods like:
  • barley
  • oatmeal
  • beans
  • nuts
  • fruits like apples, berries, citrus fruits and pears.
Both the insoluble and soluble fiber has now been linked to heart health. The role fiber plays for us in preventing heart disease is thought to be it's ability to lower both blood pressure and cholesterol.
