The French Paradox: What is it?

Back in the late 1980s, there was an expression widely used that went something like this: "Hey, it's good for my heart, right?" This was the time when experts were telling us a glass of red wine per day was actually good for you, so go ahead and enjoy it. This impression coined also in the late 1980s the phrase: "The French Paradox." I even got aboard during that time and was out tasting red wines, even buying bottles of red wine and then added a piece of cheese for a late night snack even.....

The "French Paradox" refers to the notion that drinking wine may explain the relatively low rates of heart disease among the French people despite how much they liked cheese and other rich, fatty foods. It was supposed the red wine helped them to stave off heart disease from all the other negative foods they loved to eat which could cause heart disease. Just top everything off with a glass of red wine and don't worry about heart disease from anything else you eat kind of thinking.
The French Paradox theory also started the discovery of a host of beneficial plant compounds known as "polyphenols." Polyphenols turns out to be plentiful in red and purple grape skins as well as other fruits, vegetables and nuts, but the keen thing about this discovery was that polyphenols in foods had heart-protecting properties. This meant wine was made from red and purple grape skins, especially red wine and so therefore red wine must be a great tool to help us stave off heart disease. It was an alcohol drink we could drink without feeling guilty.
Another argument came from the fact that the Mediterranean diet helped to ward off heart attacks and strokes and in fact featured "red wine."
Today, new research tells us the evidence of drinking red wine in particular or alcohol in general can help you avoid heart disease is not very strong at all. In fact, a person who does not drink alcohol and may be prone to "addictions" could  become addicted to alcohol just thinking what they were doing was good for their heart. This is the category I fell  into. However, I stopped the practice before becoming an alcoholic. I suppose had I enjoyed alone the buzz from the alcohol, I might have continued on increasing my intake until I was addicted.
Moderate drinking is defined as one drink per day for healthy women and two drinks per day for healthy men and is still widely considered SAFE. However, to this date in 2018 the health effects of alcohol have never tested in long term been true to helping us prevent any kind of disease let alone heart disease. On the flip side of that, there are some studies that suggest wine is better for the heart than beer or hard liquor, so if you are going to enjoy alcohol, the jury votes and tells us wine is probably the least harmful to our health. 
People who drink wine are more likely to drink it as part of a healthy pattern such as a glass or two with a special meal. Whereas hard liquor like beer, whiskey all the rest are drank by those who's sole purpose is to feel the "buzz."
Conclusion: If you enjoy red wine, be sure to limit yourself to moderate amounts. Measure out 5 ounces which is one serving of red wine. Use a regular measuring cup to measure your serving and then pour it into your favorite goblet.

Me being a collector, of course, I collected some pretty goblets for my heart health drinking routine! Believe it or not one serving gave me a buzz. I suppose if a person is use to drinking, or like with any other drug, as you continue to drink, it takes more and more to give you a buzz. Fortunately, I stopped the red wine drinking routine before it took more than just one serving to give me a buzz, and I really was not after the buzz to begin with.

Americans Never Eat Enough Beans!

Beans, peas and other legumes are in "style." Could it be because people are looking for more plant protein? For whatever reason, beans, peas and other legume dishes are in "style." The experts say we still eat fewer beans than recommended. I love beans! I usually eat beans several times per week.



Why are beans so good for you?

They are packed with:
  • fiber
  • protein
  • potassium
  • magnesium
  • folate
  • iron
More reasons to eat beans are:
  • Cholesterol: Beans lower LDL (bad) cholesterol
  • Blood pressure: Beans help lower blood pressure
  • Regularity: Beans contain a more concentrated source of fiber than fruit or vegetables
  • Plant protein: Eating beans instead of beef or pork can help lower your risk of colorectal cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes
One downside to beans is they can cause "gas in the stomach." To help with this problem:
  • cook beans thoroughly
  • use can beans instead
  • rinse away liquids
  • increase servings gradually
  • add 1/2 to 1 tsp. of baking soda to each pot of cook beans
For even healthier can beans, look for the no salt varieties. And in cooked beans of course you can use less salt.

Some Recent Research on Coffee, Our Most Consumed Drug

David Simon, a neurologist at the Harvard Medical School reports it has been clearly established in multiple studies that people who consume more caffeine seem to have a lower risk of Parkinson's Disease. The study involved observing people who drank one to three cups of regular coffee per day.

It was found this group of men and women to have a 40 percent lower risk of being diagnosed with Parkinson's. The consumption of coffee does not have a positive effect on people who already have Parkinson's Disease. And...the new findings does not necessarily prove that caffeine can help prevent Parkinson's. Where does that leave us on what to do? The same as before this study was done. Drinks containing caffeine in moderation may have a positive effect and most likely has little negative effects. Honestly, I sometimes think it is just somebody's job to do all these studies. Not much of anything is ever revealed in them (just my opinion).

This is good news to hear for those of us who drink more than a cup or two per day.

Coffee's effect on blood pressure has long been a hot topic for study as well. According to this article about 30 minutes after you ingest caffeine your blood pressure will probably rise by a few points and stay elevated for a few hours before returning to where it was. This is good to remember if you are going to a doctor's appointment and they take your blood pressure that shows it to be a few points higher. You can mention, you just drank some coffee that might be the cause. Drinking caffeinated coffee regularly does not seem to lead to developing high blood pressure. Source:

We can stop worrying about getting high blood pressure from drinking coffee, of course, until one of these studies tell us different.

This same article tells us not to worry that drinking moderate amounts of coffee in regard to it is going to cause heart arrhythmia. More good news of just about what we have already heard from researchers.

Wouldn't it be great if they found out coffee was the miracle cure drug to any and everything that might effect the human body? I guess that one is too much of a fantasy to ever come true.
