Study Shows Some Promise of the Mediterranean Diet Against Breast Cancer

We hear so much about the health benefits of a Mediterranean style diet, I am surprised someone has not packaged it into a home delivery deal, or has someone already thought of it?

For years the Mediterranean diet has been linked to better heart and brain health. Now there is another health benefit possibly linked to this diet. It is that it may protect women against breast cancer.

The study that revealed the possibility of protection against breast cancer was done among over 4,000 Spanish women with no previous history of breast cancer average 68. In this particular study it was revealed the Mediterranean diet enriched with extra-virgin olive oil was the winning combination. The study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

The study's authors came forth with the theory that it might be some compounds found in olive oil prevent the proliferation of cancerous cells.

Caution: This evidence is far from conclusive. Although the study had several shortcomings, some experts noted the Mediterranean diet that is based on "plant foods," fish and extra virgin olive oil is known to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and is safe. 

My feeling is it could be an extra bonus for those eating the Mediterranean diet for heart protection to reap rewards from breast cancer protection as well. However, we need to realize the message from all of this does not mean that adding olive oil to your diet will result in lower breast cancer risk. That approach will for certain increase calories that could lead to weight gain which is a risk factor for breast cancer.
