Smart Nutritional Choices Help to Fend Off Environmental Allergy Symptoms

When you think of "allergies," you most likely associate the word "allergies" with spring flowers. Fact is the season of "fall" is one of the highest allergy seasons of the year. Common allergy symptoms include:

• runny nose
• watery or itchy eyes
• sneezing
• coughing

Medication from your doctor and lessening exposure to allergens is usually the first line of defense we all pursue. It was for me. I suffered with what my doctor called "seasonal allergies" off and on all year long, but yes, it was worse in spring and fall. I took expensive prescription medication that eventually gave me such a fast heart beat I had to be taken off the medication. I found greatest relief from local raw honey.

Other ways people try to relief their allergies are:

• replacing air filters
• using air cleaners
• using facial masks while raking leaves or cutting grass

As for nutritional choices, start with local raw honey. To date, science has found NO FOODS to fight allergy symptoms explicitly with the "possible exception of raw honey." I am here to tell you raw honey has worked for me and I am so PLEASED. I suffered with allergies a lot.

If you consume local raw honey in tiny doses (local raw honey is best due to your area's unique pollen), you will over time experience more relief from allergy symptoms year round. Raw honey works somewhat like an immunization. Giving your body small doses on a daily basis might help your body experience less of an allergic reaction when you encounter the allergen. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. 

Not everybody will respond favorably even to small doses of raw honey daily. Raw honey will not provide immediate relief, however, these small doses daily may over time help reduce your allergy symptoms. This has been exactly the case for me. When I first started the raw honey warm drinks (one tsp. of raw honey per one cup of warm water flavored either naturally with fresh lemon juice or some other no calorie, no sodium water flavor enhancer), I had horrible bouts of coughing, nose and throat congestion, and sometimes progressed to bronchitis. I have been drinking these drinks now faithfully 3 times per day and sometimes 2 times per day with a great improvement in allergy symptoms, I mean it feels as if I am "healed" of allergies. I take no more expensive allergy medicine.

Some foods can work as antihistamines that may help relieve allergy symptoms for some people. The key ingredient, "quercetin" found in many fruits and vegetables is known for its anti-inflammatory effects. Best sources of quercetin are:

• apples
• berries
• cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, turnips/turnip greens, collard greens, kale and bok choy
• capers
• grapes
• onions
• shallots
• tea
• tomatoes
• beer
• red wine

The same is true for the above foods. There will be no immediate effect. Eating these foods on a regular basis may over the long term provide some people with allergy symptom relief.

Best practices year round include:

• include anti-inflammatory foods such as teas, leafy greens, onions, shallot and fruits in your diet
• protect yourself from overexposure to pollen as much as possible
• try some raw honey warm drinks daily 
• avoid types of fresh produce that may exacerbate seasonal allergies
• include the recommended daily intake of five helpings of fruit and vegetables a day

Recipe: Summer Wonder Slushie

This drink is easy to make and truly refreshing. It will help cool your inner self especially when it is very hot outside while at the same time giving your body quality nourishment.

The culinary team at Life's Abundance has whipped up this smashing nutritious summer drink. The secret ingredient is Life's Abundance Minerals and Antioxidants Drink Mix.

The following ingredients will make one large "Summer Wonder Slushie". If you're serving at a party, multiply times however many slushies you want to make, and enjoy!

Ingredients

• 1-1/2 to 2 cups chopped fresh fruit
• 1 cup ice
• 1/4 cup sparkling water
• 1 scoop Minerals & Antioxidants (Cherry or Tropical Fruit)
• Herbs, spices, honey or other flavor add-ins

Directions

1. Wash and roughly chop the fruit, discarding any pits or unwanted peels.
