Coping With Fatigue



Are you feeling tired a lot for no apparent cause or at least
that you can think of? Ever wonder what is making you feel so
tired all the time? Fatigue can have many different causes that
may include:



• Lack of sleep: You might be surprised to know that getting
even an hour less than you normally get can leave you drowsy the
next day. Is it because you did not go to bed early enough or
you went to bed, but could not go to sleep. As a person gets
older, it becomes more difficult to get uninterrupted sleep and
you may sleep less soundly and/or awaken earlier.

• Stress: Going through life each day stressed and anxious can
keep you from relaxing and getting the rest you need.

• Inactivity: If you are tired all the time, you probably feel
“too tired” to exercise, so you don’t. When you do exercise and
exert yourself, you probably get tired fairly quick because you
are out of shape. You still need to exercise to beat both these
situations. Moderate exercise for at least ½ hour or longer most
days of the week helps reduce stress, improve the mood and will
leave you feeling energized (once you get past the too tired
feelings and the tired feelings from exertion). Be careful not
to schedule your exercise sessions too close to bedtime, or you
might have trouble getting to sleep.

• Eating habits: Not eating properly or drinking enough fluids
will cause your body to not get the fuel and fluid it needs.
Avoid drinking beverages that contain caffeine close to bedtime.


• Certain medications: Many different medications can cause
fatigue, antidepressants, allergy medicines, antihistamines and
many beta blockers can cause fatigue. Cold medications and pain
relievers that contain caffeine and other stimulants can help to
keep you up at night.

Tips to battle against fatigue include:

•Reduce your everyday stress: Say “no” more often. Set
priorities. Organize activities to avoid confusion. Do something
each day that you enjoy.
•Manage workplace tension
•Be active
•Eat well
•Avoid Alcohol
•Avoid eating, reading or watching TV in bed.
•Keep your sleeping room cool, dark and quiet.
•Set your alarm for the same time each day (this routine can
help you establish a regular sleep schedule).
•Take only short naps early in the day
•Schedule exercises at least six hours before bedtime
•Eat small snacks before bed
•Avoid large late-night meals
•If you can’t sleep, do not continue tossing and turning, get
up, go into another part of your house, read or relax until you
feel drowsy, then return to your sleeping room.

The Benefits Of Weight Training


Weight training improves your muscular strength. With improved
muscle strength you will be able to work longer without getting
tired. Weight training also improves your appearance and helps
to fight age-related muscle loss. It is not as complicated as
you might think, and it does not take as much time as you would
think.

When I use to think of weight training, I had visions of long
hard work-outs, lifting heavy weights what seemed like 1,000’s
of times. I could see the sweat dripping from weight lifters
faces and their entire bodies looked wet with sweat. It was not
something I was real enthused about doing for myself. Now that I
have learned some of facts about weight training, I will be
starting a program soon. You can build muscle with only one set
of repetitions!

What is weight training? Weight training is a type of strength
training that uses weights for resistance. Weight training
challenges your muscles by forcing them to adapt to the stress
of the weights.

Research continues to show that a single set of 12 repetitions
with the proper weight can build muscle just as efficiently as
three sets of the same exercise. Good news for those of us who
do not want to spend hours in the fitness center working out
with weights! I will probably soon see if this actually the case
for myself, but I am one who would never spend hours lifting
weights. I see the young guys in the fitness center that look
like they do a lot of “just hanging out,” there when I arrive
for a 60 minute walk. They are there when I arrive, and there
when I leave. For some, the theory that it takes countless sets
of repetitions to build muscle still prevails. And this might be
also true for those who want to build muscles big enough to
compete in the wrestling rings or something else. For those of
us who only want a little extra strength while pushing the
vacuum cleaner and routine chores around the house, one set of
12 repetitions should suffice.

You will need to use a weight heavy enough tire your muscles.
You will know the weight is heavy enough when you are just
barely able to finish the 12th repetition. In just 20 to 30
minutes, you should be able to complete a series of weight
training exercises for your arms, shoulders, abdomen, chest back
and legs.

If you have never lifted weights before you might find you are
only able to lift a few pounds. Your muscles, tendons and
ligaments need to get used to weight training exercises. Once
this happens you will be surprised at how quickly you progress.
After you are able to do 12 repetitions with a particular
weight, increase the weight by up to 10 percent at a time.

Your muscles will need time to recover. A rest of one full day
between exercising each specific muscle group is recommended. A
good plan might be to work the major muscle groups at a single
session two or three times a week. If you decide to lift weights
every day, exercise specific muscle groups each day. On Monday
you could work your arms and shoulders, then on Tuesday work
your legs, and so on until you have finished all major muscle
groups, then start all over again.

Most people find short sessions two or three times per week are
more practical than extended daily workouts. Just 20 to 30
minutes two to three times a week should allow you to see
significant improvement.

As you age if you do not do anything to replace muscle loss, it
will turn to fat. Weight training can help you reverse this
trend at any age. Weight training and other types of strength
training can improve the quality of your life giving you the
ability to complete daily tasks for adults even in their 80s and
90s.

As muscle mass increases, you maintain joint flexibility,
increase bone density and better manage your weight. The results
of weight training may also improve your mental health and
reduce the risk of depression. These are all good reasons to
include sessions of weight training into your total fitness
program.

Signs And Symptoms Of Alzheimer’s Disease


One of the most common causes for dementia is Alzheimer’s
disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the loss of intellectual and
social abilities severe enough to interfere with daily
functioning. The dementia is caused when healthy brain tissue
degenerates. Memory and mental abilities steadily decline.



Alzheimer’s disease usually develops in people 65 or older.

Signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease include:

• Increasing and persistent forgetfulness: In the beginning of
Alzheimer’s disease a person may experience periods of
forgetfulness, especially of recent events or simple directions.
This forgetfulness persists and worsens. People with Alzheimer’s
disease routinely misplace things, often putting them in strange
or “illogical” places. They frequently forget names, and may
even eventually forget the names of family members and everyday
objects.

• Difficulties with abstract thinking: People who suffer with
Alzheimer’s disease may initially have trouble balancing their
checkbook and may progress to trouble recognizing numbers.

• Loss of judgment: Common everyday problem solving such as
knowing what to do if food on the stove is burning becomes
increasingly difficult, eventually impossible. There is greater
difficulty in doing things that require planning, decision
making and judgment.

• Difficulty performing familiar tasks: Routine tasks that
require sequential steps such as cooking become increasingly
difficult as the disease progresses.

• Personality changes: Mood swings may occur. People with
Alzheimer’s disease may begin to distrust others, become anxious
or aggressive, show stubbornness and withdraw socially.

It is not a normal part of aging to forget the names of familiar
people and objects, and may be a sign of Alzheimer’s disease. It
is normal to forget the names of people whom you rarely see, but
to forget the names of familiar people you see everyday is not
normal.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disease
that causes more than simple forgetfulness every now and then.
Eventually, Alzheimer’s disease leads to irreversible mental
impairment that destroys a person’s ability to remember, reason,
learn and imagine.

The disease progresses differently from person to person. Once
diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, eight years is the average
length of time unto death. Some people, however, live more than
a decade with the disease. Survival begins to decline three
years after diagnosis.

Regular Activity Is Important In Controlling High Blood Pressure



Regular exercise can help prevent high blood pressure, and if
your blood pressure is already high, exercise can help you
control it.

You can strengthen your heart with regular physical activity.
The less your heart needs to work, the less force or pressure is
exerted on your arteries. For some people exercise alone can
reduce the need for blood pressure medication.

If your blood pressure is already at a desirable level, exercise
can keep it from rising as you age. Another important key in
controlling blood pressure is a healthy weight. Exercise can
also help you maintain a healthy weight.

The main core to it all is keeping it up. It takes approximately
one to three months of regular exercise to have a stabilizing
effect on blood pressure. The benefits received from regular
exercise only continue as long as you stay with it.

Any activity that increases your heart and breathing rates is
considered aerobic. Common forms of aerobic activity include:

•Mowing the lawn
•Raking leaves
•Scrubbing floors
•Walking in the mall, on scenic trails or a treadmill
•Jogging
•Climbing stairs
•Bicycling
•Swimming
•Dancing

An appropriate goal is at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity
most days of the week. Shorter periods of aerobic activity count
too if you cannot exercise in one period of time.

You need to check with your doctor first if:

•You are a man older than age 40 or a woman older than age 50
•You smoke
•You are overweight or obese
•You have a chronic health condition, including high blood
pressure or high cholesterol
•You have had a heart attack
•You have a family history of heart-related problems before age
55
•You feel pain in your chest or become dizzy with exertion
•You are unsure of whether or not you should start an exercise
program
•If you take medication regularly, ask your doctor how the
increased activity will affect the way your body reacts to
exercise

To keep your aerobic workouts safe and reduce the possibility of
injuries:

•Warm up before you exercise
•Cool down after you exercise
•Gradually build up the intensity of your workouts

Seek immediate medical care if you experience any of the
following warning signs during exercise:

•Chest pain or tightness
•Dizziness or faintness
•Pain in an arm or your jaw
•Severe shortness of breath
•An irregular heartbeat
•Excessive fatigue

The only way to know for sure that you have high blood pressure
is to keep track of your blood pressure readings. If you check
your blood pressure using an at home monitoring device, check
your blood pressure before you exercise. This will ensure
accurate readings.
