Chocolate And Walnuts: Good For The Health



Chocolate has antioxidant-rich phytochemicals called flavanols.
Although chocolate have some healthful antioxidants it is still
considered a “treat” food by professional dietitians. It is not
a health food. Walnuts on the other hand are loaded with
nutritional benefits.

Some researchers think the cocoa bean may improve blood flow and
reduce the formation of clots. The Kuna Indians of Panama are
heavy consumers of cocoa. They boast an unusually low amount of
hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Harvard researchers
found that chocolate eaters lived a year longer than abstainers.
Most believe chocolate causes acne; this is not true. A small
study done recently suggests the appearance of the skin of
chocolate-eating women showed improvement.

Not all chocolate is good for you. In general, darker chocolate
is better because it contains more flavanols and less sugar than
milk chocolate.

Use cocoa powder that has been dutched to make hot chocolate.
The dutch treatment destroys phytochemicals.

And as for walnuts – well – walnuts are a whole different story.
Walnuts offer substantial cardiovascular benefits. The FDA
allows companies to say on their packaging that eating 1.5
ounces every day can reduce the risk of heart disease.

Walnuts are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, particularly
alpha-linolenic acid, which helps to raise the good cholesterol.
Researchers have also found that the alpha-linolenic found in
walnuts helps keep your blood flowing smoothly through your
arteries – even after you eat a lot of saturated fats, which can
harden the arteries and potentially contribute to heart attack
and stroke. Fat found in walnuts decrease inflammation in the
arteries and helps keep them flexible.

Walnuts are rich in antioxidants that help rid the body of
unstable molecules called free radicals, which can lead to
cancer. Other benefits of walnuts may include:

•Some protection against the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis
•Good for your teeth in that they help to fight cavities
•Helps increase the feeling of fullness after a meal (try eating
six walnuts twice a day, 30 minutes before lunch and 30 minutes
before dinner)

Storing walnuts:

•Store shelled walnuts in the refrigerator in an airtight
container to keep them fresh for up to six months. Freeze them
to last up to a year.
•Store unshelled walnuts in the refrigerator. They will keep for
up to six months in any cool, dark place.

Walnuts and chocolate seem to go good together and both are good
for you. Walnuts and chocolate are both high in calories so
moderation is the key when enjoying either of them. Walnuts seem
to have the most scientific proof of being an excellent health
food especially for the heart. Chocolate is still considered a

Common Skin Allergies

When your skin comes in contact with an allergen that your skin
is sensitive or allergic to you will develop what is called a
“skin allergy.”

Skin allergies also occur:

• When you eat food or even proteins you breathe in may cause
symptoms to appear on your skin. These reactions are commonly
called hives or rashes, and usually appears within 48 hours
after the initial exposure to the allergen.

Symptoms commonly seen in skin allergies are:

• Redness
• Swelling
• Blistering
• Itching
• Hives and rashes.

You can even develop a skin allergy to a substance in a product
that you have used for many years. The product does not have to
be a new one. The most common types of allergic contact
dermatitis are allergies to:

• Poison ivy
• Oak
• Sumac

Another fairly common type of skin allergy is:

• Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)

Atopic Dermatitis is especially common in infants and children.
Atopic dermatitis is the most difficult to treat. Atopic
dermatitis usually goes away during childhood, or by the age of
25. However, for some people it is a lifelong skin disease.
Adults can also develop atopic dermatitis.

Researchers have found that atopic dermatitis can be triggered
by:

• Allergy
• Emotional stress
• Involves high levels of immunoglobulin E (lgE), which is the
major allergy antibody.

It is also related to the development of other allergies, such
as allergic rhinitis and asthma, in most children.

Symptoms of atopic dermatitis are:

• Itchy rash that appears first as small white pimples with red
centers over the infant’s cheeks, neck and scalp. When the
infant begins to scratch the rash, the area can become infected,
produce fluid and spread over a wider area.

• The rash can also appear on the outside surfaces of the arms
and legs. It often does not appear in the diapered area.

In older children the rash appears on the:

• Inner forearm;
• Behind the knees and
• Opposite the elbows.

Over time if the skin is chronically affected by the rash, it
will become dry, thick and browner in color. Some children
develop the rash on the eyelids, palms of the hand and soles of
the feet.

Teenagers and young adults get the rash most often in:

• The bend of the elbow;
• Back of the knees, ankles and wrists;
• On the face
• Neck
• Chest
• And palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

Atopic dermatitis is not contagious. However, if the scratching
leads to a bacterial infection such as Staphylococcus aureus of
an area covered by eczema, this can cause impetigo. Impetigo is
a skin infection that is contagious.

A doctor will take a careful medical history, looking for
allergy in other family members. Skin testing helps confirm food
allergies. A food challenge can also confirm that atopic
dermatitis is triggered by food.

A food challenge is when suspected foods are removed from the
diet, and then they are added back in, first in small amounts
then in increasing quantities. The patient is watched to see if
symptoms recur.

Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis begins with efforts to reduce the
itching and inflammation. A person affected with Atopic
Dermatitis can:

• Bathe in warm water not hot water for no more than 3-5
minutes.
• Use super fatted, unscented soap or soap substitute.
• Pat the skin dry.
• Promptly apply moisturizer to help keep the skin hydrated.
• For thickened skin area, moisturizing ointments are used.
• Trim the patient’s fingernails to reduce problems from
scratching.
• At night, patients can wear cotton socks on their feet or
gloves on their hands to prevent scratching while asleep.
• If the rash is oozing, doctors may prescribe a lotion to dry
the rash and an antibiotic to treat infection. Do not use
corticosteroid products on the face if a rash is present.

Other ways you can help control and treat Atopic Dermatitis are:


• Stay indoors in air conditioning when the weather is hot to
avoid sweating and itchiness.
• Use a humidifier in the winter to keep skin from drying out.
• Avoid wool, polyester, wrinkle-resistant, flame-retardant or
scratchy fabrics in clothes and bedding.
• Reduce indoor allergens by washing bedding in hot water,
removing rugs, stuffed furniture, stuffed toys and curtains
where possible.

If symptoms resist normal treatment remember that the disease
can be controlled. It may take awhile to find out the cause and
what the best treatment for it is. The condition also nearly
always improves over time.

Coping With Fatigue



Are you feeling tired a lot for no apparent cause or at least
that you can think of? Ever wonder what is making you feel so
tired all the time? Fatigue can have many different causes that
may include:



• Lack of sleep: You might be surprised to know that getting
even an hour less than you normally get can leave you drowsy the
next day. Is it because you did not go to bed early enough or
you went to bed, but could not go to sleep. As a person gets
older, it becomes more difficult to get uninterrupted sleep and
you may sleep less soundly and/or awaken earlier.

• Stress: Going through life each day stressed and anxious can
keep you from relaxing and getting the rest you need.

• Inactivity: If you are tired all the time, you probably feel
“too tired” to exercise, so you don’t. When you do exercise and
exert yourself, you probably get tired fairly quick because you
are out of shape. You still need to exercise to beat both these
situations. Moderate exercise for at least ½ hour or longer most
days of the week helps reduce stress, improve the mood and will
leave you feeling energized (once you get past the too tired
feelings and the tired feelings from exertion). Be careful not
to schedule your exercise sessions too close to bedtime, or you
might have trouble getting to sleep.

• Eating habits: Not eating properly or drinking enough fluids
will cause your body to not get the fuel and fluid it needs.
Avoid drinking beverages that contain caffeine close to bedtime.


• Certain medications: Many different medications can cause
fatigue, antidepressants, allergy medicines, antihistamines and
many beta blockers can cause fatigue. Cold medications and pain
relievers that contain caffeine and other stimulants can help to
keep you up at night.

Tips to battle against fatigue include:

•Reduce your everyday stress: Say “no” more often. Set
priorities. Organize activities to avoid confusion. Do something
each day that you enjoy.
•Manage workplace tension
•Be active
•Eat well
•Avoid Alcohol
•Avoid eating, reading or watching TV in bed.
•Keep your sleeping room cool, dark and quiet.
•Set your alarm for the same time each day (this routine can
help you establish a regular sleep schedule).
•Take only short naps early in the day
•Schedule exercises at least six hours before bedtime
•Eat small snacks before bed
•Avoid large late-night meals
•If you can’t sleep, do not continue tossing and turning, get
up, go into another part of your house, read or relax until you
feel drowsy, then return to your sleeping room.

The Benefits Of Weight Training


Weight training improves your muscular strength. With improved
muscle strength you will be able to work longer without getting
tired. Weight training also improves your appearance and helps
to fight age-related muscle loss. It is not as complicated as
you might think, and it does not take as much time as you would
think.

When I use to think of weight training, I had visions of long
hard work-outs, lifting heavy weights what seemed like 1,000’s
of times. I could see the sweat dripping from weight lifters
faces and their entire bodies looked wet with sweat. It was not
something I was real enthused about doing for myself. Now that I
have learned some of facts about weight training, I will be
starting a program soon. You can build muscle with only one set
of repetitions!

What is weight training? Weight training is a type of strength
training that uses weights for resistance. Weight training
challenges your muscles by forcing them to adapt to the stress
of the weights.

Research continues to show that a single set of 12 repetitions
with the proper weight can build muscle just as efficiently as
three sets of the same exercise. Good news for those of us who
do not want to spend hours in the fitness center working out
with weights! I will probably soon see if this actually the case
for myself, but I am one who would never spend hours lifting
weights. I see the young guys in the fitness center that look
like they do a lot of “just hanging out,” there when I arrive
for a 60 minute walk. They are there when I arrive, and there
when I leave. For some, the theory that it takes countless sets
of repetitions to build muscle still prevails. And this might be
also true for those who want to build muscles big enough to
compete in the wrestling rings or something else. For those of
us who only want a little extra strength while pushing the
vacuum cleaner and routine chores around the house, one set of
12 repetitions should suffice.

You will need to use a weight heavy enough tire your muscles.
You will know the weight is heavy enough when you are just
barely able to finish the 12th repetition. In just 20 to 30
minutes, you should be able to complete a series of weight
training exercises for your arms, shoulders, abdomen, chest back
and legs.

If you have never lifted weights before you might find you are
only able to lift a few pounds. Your muscles, tendons and
ligaments need to get used to weight training exercises. Once
this happens you will be surprised at how quickly you progress.
After you are able to do 12 repetitions with a particular
weight, increase the weight by up to 10 percent at a time.

Your muscles will need time to recover. A rest of one full day
between exercising each specific muscle group is recommended. A
good plan might be to work the major muscle groups at a single
session two or three times a week. If you decide to lift weights
every day, exercise specific muscle groups each day. On Monday
you could work your arms and shoulders, then on Tuesday work
your legs, and so on until you have finished all major muscle
groups, then start all over again.

Most people find short sessions two or three times per week are
more practical than extended daily workouts. Just 20 to 30
minutes two to three times a week should allow you to see
significant improvement.

As you age if you do not do anything to replace muscle loss, it
will turn to fat. Weight training can help you reverse this
trend at any age. Weight training and other types of strength
training can improve the quality of your life giving you the
ability to complete daily tasks for adults even in their 80s and
90s.

As muscle mass increases, you maintain joint flexibility,
increase bone density and better manage your weight. The results
of weight training may also improve your mental health and
reduce the risk of depression. These are all good reasons to
include sessions of weight training into your total fitness
program.
