Restless Legs Syndrome



An irresistible urge to move the legs is called “Restless Legs
Syndrome.” The urge to move the legs is usually due to
unpleasant feelings in the legs that occur when at rest.
Movement eases the feelings for a while. Although symptoms
mostly affect in the legs, they can also affect the arms.



There are two types of restless legs syndrome, they are:

1.Primary: Cause is not know, but tends to run in families, and
is the most common
2.Secondary: Caused by another disease or condition or by taking
certain medicines.

Restless legs syndrome is common in pregnant women and usually
occurs during the last months of pregnancy. It usually improves
or disappears within a few weeks after delivery.

People with restless legs syndrome describe their symptoms with
words like creeping, crawling, tingling or burning sensations.
The unpleasant feelings may also occur in the arms.

People with RLS often don’t get enough sleep because RLS can
make it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. They are often
tired and sleepy during the day which makes it difficult to:

•Concentrate, learn and remember things
•Work
•Carry out other usual daily activities
•Take part in family and social activities

Not getting enough sleep can also cause depression or mood
swings.

People with RLS usually also have a condition called periodic
limb movement disorder. PLMD is characterized by leg twitching
or jerking uncontrollably about every 10 to 60 seconds usually
during sleep. The legs are usually most affected, but PLMD can
also affect the arms.

Although RLS is unpleasant and uncomfortable, there are some
simple self-care approaches and lifestyle changes that can help
in mild cases. RLS symptoms often improve with medical
treatment. There is ongoing research to better understand the
causes of RLS and to develop better treatments.

Medicines that can cause RLS

RLS symptoms usually go away when medicine is stopped, if the
RLS symptoms are actually caused by the medicine. You should
never stop taking any kind of medicine that is prescribed by
your doctor unless he or she instructs you to do so. Medicines
that can cause RLS are:

•Antiseizure medicines
•Antinausea medicines
•Antidepressants
•Some cold and allergy medicines
Other substances that can cause RLS symptoms or make them worse
include:
•Caffeine
•Alcohol
•Tobacco

Although RLS affects both men and women, the disorder occurs
more often in women than in men. The age group in which RLS
mostly occurs is middle age; however, in up to two out of every
five cases, the symptoms of RLS begin before age 20. People who
develop RLS early in life usually have a family history of the
disorder. The disorder is also more common in persons of
northern European descent.

Signs and Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome include:

•An almost irresistible urge to move the legs or arms when
sitting or lying down
•An unpleasant feeling in the legs
•Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep because of the
unpleasant feelings in the legs or arms
•Daytime sleepiness that results from a lack of restful sleep
due to the repeated limb movements

Restless legs syndrome gets its name from the urge to move the
legs when sitting or lying down. Typical movements include:

•Pacing and walking
•Jiggling the legs
•Stretching and flexing
•Tossing and turning
•Rubbing the legs

To help your doctor take a medical history, and to provide you
with an appropriate diagnosis, provide him or her with answers
to the following questions:

•Can you describe your symptoms?
•When did your symptoms first begin?
•When during the day or night do the symptoms usually occur?
•When are your symptoms worse?
•Do symptoms interfere with your sleep?
•What time do you go to bed and get up?
•What is your routine before going to bed?
•What kind of noise, light, interruptions are there in the room
where you sleep?
•Do you snore?
•Are you tired and sleepy when you wake up and during the day?
•Do you have trouble concentrating?
•Do you doze off or have difficult staying awake doing routine
tasks, especially while driving?
•Do other members of your family have similar symptoms?
•What medicines (over-the-counter and prescription) do you take?

•Do you gasp for air during sleep?
•Do you use caffeine, tobacco, or alcohol?

Listed below are some lifestyle changes to improve and relieve
symptoms of RLS:

•Avoid things that can make symptoms of RLS worse such as
tobacco, alcohol, foods and beverages that contain caffeine such
as chocolate, coffee, tea, and some soft drinks
•Medicines: Only at the advice of your doctor should you stop
taking medicines that have been specifically prescribed for you.
There are some medicines that can make the symptoms of RLS worse
and they include: Antidepressants, antinausea medicines,
antipsychotic medicines, antihistamines.
•Adopt good sleep habits such as keeping your bedroom or sleep
area cool, quiet, comfortable and free of unnecessary light. Use
your bedroom for sleeping, not for watching TV or using
computers or the telephone. Go to bed every night at the same
time and wake up at the same time every morning.
•Follow a program of moderate exercise
Other activities that may also help relieve symptoms include:
•Walking or stretching
•Taking a hot or cold bath
•Massaging the leg or arm
•Using heat or ice packs

Doctors prescribe medicines to treat RLS in people who:

•Have clearly defined symptoms
•Those who have symptoms that cannot be controlled by lifestyle
and non-drug treatments.

There is no single medicine that is helpful in all persons with
RLS. It sometimes takes several changes in medicines and dosages
to find the best approach. Always talk to your doctor before
taking any medicines or over-the-counter medicines for your
symptoms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved
ropinirole to treat moderate to severe RLS.

Restless legs syndrome is very often a lifelong condition. The
symptoms may come and go frequently or they may disappear
completely for long periods of time. They may even get worse
over time. Lifestyle changes and medicines can help control and
relieve symptoms of restless legs syndrome. Discuss with your
doctor about lifestyle changes and medicines that might help
your symptoms. As research continues new treatments are being
developed.

Red Wine And The Aging Process


Recent research suggests that aging as we know it may not be
inevitable. We know that some animals do not seem to age such as
many cold-water ocean fish, some amphibians and the American
lobster continue to grow bigger, are able to reproduce and to
live until something kills them. Some people believe that
because of the animals that do not seem to age that it could be
something in their genes, and possibly in our genes, that
controls the pace of aging, and that aging is not the fate of
every living thing.

Scientists have discovered that when animals are forced to live
on 30 to 40 percent fewer calories than they would normally eat,
they become resistant to most age-related diseases that include:


•Cancer
•Heart disease
•Diabetes
•Alzheimers

And they also live 30 to 50 percent longer. Judging from the
animal studies, calorie restriction slows aging.

How this is, noone knows for sure, nor why aging occurs and what
are the underlying genes that preserve vitality and stave off
disease.

Few of us humans are capable of restricting our diets by 30 to
40 percent without being constantly hungry. So some scientists
began to look for ways to trigger the sirtuin system in action
without restricting calories. In 2003, a handful of
sirtuin-activating compounds were discovered. Resveratrol – a
molecule produced in plants such as red-wine grapes was the most
potent.

Resveratrol and other STACs have enhanced the vitality and
extended the life span of every species they have been fed to
such as:

•Yeast
•Fruit flies
•Worms
•Fish

The maximum life span of the fish increased 59 percent, which is
equivalent to a human living to 194 years. These results are
remarkable; however, it is unclear if resveratrol works in the
same manner in warm-blooded furry animals.

In studies with mice it was found that resveratrol:

•Reduced the risk of death by 30 percent
•The mice treated with resveratrol were leaner and developed a
greatly enhanced aerobic capacity
•Their muscles were consuming oxygen more efficiently
•Had greater capacity to generate energy
•The mice could run twice as far without getting tired
•At least for mice, resveratrol was found to be an outstanding
performance-enhancing drug

Evidence also indicates that resveratrol may protect against
aging-related diseases. In studies around the world, resveratrol
protected mice against:

•Heart disease
•Cancer
•Diabetes
•Alzheimer’s disease

These are the very diseases that reduce most people’s life span.
The question of what this all means for humans is still
unanswered, yet, could be just as beneficial. Things that are
true in mice are often, but not always, true in humans.

Researchers plan many more studies in both animals and in humans
in 2007. Some of the first human studies of resveratrol will
tell us whether it can help people with either type 2 diabetes
or a rare condition called MELAS syndrome that causes brain and
muscle destruction in children.

Other good news is that research has started now to find sirtuin
activators that have the same effects as resveratrol, but are
more potent.

Animals that have been given resveratrol treatment are
remarkably vital until the end. The studies in animals seem
promising. In the future we may be taking resveratrol
supplements right along with our daily multivitamins. As of
today, however, according to scientific proof, it is still
better not to start drinking red wine if you are a non-alcoholic
drinker to begin with in the hopes of prolonging your life or
having better health. We are probably still safer drinking our
100% grape juice until further studies prove resveratrol in red
wine is worth drinking an alcoholic beverage.

Peanut Butter Can Be Healthy


Some good news for those of us who like peanut butter is that
researchers at Harvard University’s School of Public Health
found eating a half serving (one tablespoon) of peanut butter or
a full serving peanuts or other nuts (an ounce), five or more
times a week, lowers the risk of developing type-2 diabetes by
as much as 20 to 30 percent. Dr. Frank Hu, associate professor
of nutrition and epidemiology says, “the body of evidence is
overwhelming that peanuts and nut butters can reduce the risk of
serious disease.”

Peanut butter contains about 90 percent peanuts and is packed
with vitamins A and E, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc,
iron and fiber. It is loaded with monounsaturated, which is the
so-called “good fat” that does not raise blood cholesterol
levels. It is also virtually trans fat free according to the
U.S. Department of Agriculture. Healthy eating habits definitely
include “peanut butter.”

Other encouraging studies include ones done at Penn State
University where researchers compared a low-fat diet to one that
was higher in monounsaturated fat from peanuts and peanut
butter. Results were both diets will lower total and
LDL-cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) levels. The peanut and
peanut-butter diet had the added benefit of lowering
triglyceride levels. Heart disease is linked to high
triglycerides. The low-fat dieters lowered cardiovascular
disease risk by only 12 percent, while the peanut and
peanut-butter dieters lowered their risk by 21 percent.

Another interesting finding at Penn State is that peanut eaters
had lower body mass indexes (BMIs) as compared to non-peanut
eaters. High BMI (higher than 25) increases your risk of
obesity-related problems like heart disease and/or diabetes.

On the negative side is that peanut butter is high in calories.
A single serving or two tablespoons of low-fat or regular peanut
butter has about 190 calories. Just be careful about eating a
whole jar of peanut butter in one sitting. Peanut butter as a
snack or a peanut butter and jelly on whole-wheat bread is
acceptable.

Chocolate And Walnuts: Good For The Health



Chocolate has antioxidant-rich phytochemicals called flavanols.
Although chocolate have some healthful antioxidants it is still
considered a “treat” food by professional dietitians. It is not
a health food. Walnuts on the other hand are loaded with
nutritional benefits.

Some researchers think the cocoa bean may improve blood flow and
reduce the formation of clots. The Kuna Indians of Panama are
heavy consumers of cocoa. They boast an unusually low amount of
hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Harvard researchers
found that chocolate eaters lived a year longer than abstainers.
Most believe chocolate causes acne; this is not true. A small
study done recently suggests the appearance of the skin of
chocolate-eating women showed improvement.

Not all chocolate is good for you. In general, darker chocolate
is better because it contains more flavanols and less sugar than
milk chocolate.

Researchers have also found that the alpha-linolenic found in
walnuts helps keep your blood flowing smoothly through your

harden the arteries and potentially contribute to heart attack
and stroke. Fat found in walnuts decrease inflammation in the
arteries and helps keep them flexible.

Walnuts are rich in antioxidants that help rid the body of
unstable molecules called free radicals, which can lead to
cancer. Other benefits of walnuts may include:

•Some protection against the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis
•Good for your teeth in that they help to fight cavities
•Helps increase the feeling of fullness after a meal (try eating
six walnuts twice a day, 30 minutes before lunch and 30 minutes
before dinner)

Storing walnuts:

•Store shelled walnuts in the refrigerator in an airtight
container to keep them fresh for up to six months. Freeze them
to last up to a year.
•Store unshelled walnuts in the refrigerator. They will keep for
up to six months in any cool, dark place.

Walnuts and chocolate seem to go good together and both are good
for you. Walnuts and chocolate are both high in calories so
moderation is the key when enjoying either of them. Walnuts seem
to have the most scientific proof of being an excellent health
food especially for the heart. Chocolate is still considered a
“treat” food.
