What can cause early heart failure?

• something damages the heart muscle
• something reduces the heart's ability to pump effectively
• the damage to heart muscles and/or to pump effectively is often related to high blood pressure or a genetic disease

Whatever the cause, the failing heart can no longer pump well enough to keep up with the body's demand for oxygen-rich blood.

How can you and doctors quickly spot a possible combination of heart failure symptoms? The Heart Failure Society of America developed a tool that goes with the acronym FACES that goes like this:

• Fatigue: A general feeling of tiredness or fatigue sets in
• Activity limitations: You become unable to do your normal activities, you become easily tired and short of breath
• Congestion: Fluid buildup in the lungs results in coughing, wheezing and breathing difficulty
• Edema or ankle swelling: Fluid collects in the ankles, legs, thighs and abdomen. Excess fluid can also cause rapid weight gain
• Shortness of breath: It may be harder to breathe when lying down and other times

Any of these symptoms alone do not confirm heart failure, but if you experience any of them, it does warrant an urgency to seek medical advice for further testing perhaps.

If you are diagnosed with heart disease you should avoid the following drugs:

• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Ibuprofen or Motrin
• Heartburn medication and cold remedies
• Remedies containing ephedra, St. John's wort, ginseng, hawthorn, black cohosh and green tea
