The Spinach Model for Possible Heart Damage Repair

A team of researchers think the leafy green vegetable called spinach may also be a key to repairing damaged hearts. This was described in the May 2017 issue of Biomaterials. How was this determined? Researchers used:

• detergent to dissolve cells inside a spinach leaf that left the scaffolding of the leaf veins which resemble blood vessels in the heart
• they then seeded the veins with human heart stem cells
• after 5 days the cells spontaneously began to contract and continued to beat for 3 weeks

The authors of this study explained if a number of leaves were stacked up, some of the vascular networks could serve as arteries and other networks would serve as veins. The goal was to create a piece of heart tissue that could be used to repair the damage caused by a heart attack. Reality tells us this possibility is still a long ways off, but if successful, the "spinach model" offers the added advantage of being one of the true green technologies.
