A headline or a title of any article is of course the first line of content we read. It should catch the eye as quickly as possible. This is probably why even headlines on topics as important as the latest "food studies" should draw the reader in enough to at least read the next few paragraphs after. EXTRA, EXTRA, read all about it! Below: A newsboy selling papers in 1905. Looks as if he is saying: "Extra, Extra, Read All About it!
Unfortunately, what the headline says "sometimes" if not a "whole lot of the time" is not exactly what the studies revealed. See the following "real" headline example:
"ALZHEIMER'S: HOW EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL PREVENTS BRAIN PLAQUES AND PRESERVES MEMORY." This was the headline in a article printed in Newsweek.
Behind the headline: "Extra virgin olive oil is the key ingredient of the Mediterranean diet that protects the brain from Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline, scientists have discovered," was announced in Newsweek in June. Now is that not a bit deceiving? Is it in fact full closure of the matter?
And that is not all. Scientists used mice that are genetically engineered to get memory loss and plaques and tau tangles that occur in the brains of people with Alzheimer's. There were other facts "researchers" did not mention in the actual studies such as "how much virgin oil was actually given to the mice that did better on memory tests and learning than the mice that got no olive oil. Don't rush out and buy a lot of extra virgin olive oil based upon this one study thinking it will "prevent" plaques and preserve memory.
According to this article in Nutrition Action News Letter, extra virgin olive oil is good for your heart, but it is way too early to say if will also preserve your memory. (source: Nutrition Action News Letter September 2017, Volume 44, Number 7)
