Eat Slower, It May Pay Off in Keeping the Weight Off

In BMJ Open a Japanese study of adults with diabetes found a possible link between eating slowly and maintaining a healthy body weight.


This study examined health records of close to 60,000 Japanese adults with type 2 diabetes. During checkups covering 6 years of medical exams, patients were asked whether they ate fast, slow or normal eaters.

Fast eaters might take in more calories before their brains let their stomachs know they are full. Slow eaters may feel "finished eating" with smaller portions and few calorie intake. Weight control could possibly be achieved by eating slower, allowing our brains to tell us we are full before we overeat and take in more calories than our bodies can burn up.
There actually is a growing body of knowledge suggesting slower eating is one strategy to achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight. It is a simple one that anyone can learn to do.

The Sad Affects of Frailty in Older Adults

The Mediterranean diet, like other healthy eating patterns, is rich in unsaturated fats like olive oil and nuts. Healthy eating patterns also emphasize:


  • whole grains
  • legumes
  • fish
  • fresh fruits
  • vegetables
  • limits red and processed meat, refined grains and added sugar
Nutrition science consistently produces evidence that eating patterns containing the above is good for YOU and ME. The range of health benefits include, but is not limited to:
  • improved cardiovascular health
  • lower risk of type 2 diabetes
  • weight gain
A new study has linked the Mediterranean diet to a lower risk of frailty as we age. Frailty refers to a cluster of health problems that robs older adults of their independence and quality of life. In essence this means healthy aging follows healthy eating.

Signs of frailty include:
  • slow walking speed
  • frequent exhaustion
  • physical inactivity (less than one hour per week)
  • weakness (such as having difficulty rising from a chair)
  • unintentional weight loss
  • poor balance
  • impaired vision
  • impaired memory and other mental skills
Studies indicate frailty affects about 10% of adults age 65 and older and 25% or more of people 85 and older. Frailty leaves people more vulnerable to:
  • falls and fractures
  • disability
  • hospitalization
  • admission to nursing homes
  • premature death
Frailty is one reason why a simple case of the flu can turn into a life threatening illness in elderly people.
At this time it is not fully understood exactly what puts people at the highest risk of frailty. Diet is one obvious possibility. Some studies already suggest a healthy diet can possibly offset the condition of becoming frail as an older adult. 
A recent study example done in Taiwan and published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society linked diet quality and frailty risk. The study lasted 3 years of adults 65 and older. It was found these adults were less likely to develop frailty when their diet included generous servings of fruit, nuts and seeds, tea, vegetables, whole grains, milk and seafood.
Similar studies have found people who eat a Mediterranean diet or a diet similar seem to live more independently in their community and they were less likely to become frail.
Of course none of these studies absolute indicate any kind of diet prevents frailty. It is only possible that those who follow healthy eating patterns are healthier overall. There are always other variable involved such as exercise, no smoking, limiting alcohol, etc.  Healthy eating patterns is just one step toward reducing frailty in older adults.
