Regular Exercise Protects Our Health

Exercise research increasingly shows us it does not take much activity for all physiological functions to work together for our good. Harvard scientists discovered when you exercise your muscles release natural substances that help relax blood vessel walls, lower blood pressure, reduce "bad" LDL cholesterol, increase "good" HDL cholesterol, move glucose out of the bloodstream and into the cells where it is needed, lower insulin levels, and reduce inflammation These functions together help protect us against heart disease stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Yoga exercises also are beneficial.



The question remains for many of us: What should we do?

Add physical activity to your list of daily health requirements the same as you wear a seat belt or brush your teeth. Set a goal for half an hour of moderate physical activity most days of the week or 150 minutes per week. If that seems overwhelming, start with a few minutes per day and increase the amount you exercise by five or 10 minutes every week until you reach the goal of 150 minutes per week.

Walking is my chosen aerobic exercise, however, if you don't want to walk there are countless other ways you can work activity into your daily life. There is stair climbing, tennis, dancing, swimming, even household activities can count such as mopping the floor, vacuuming carpets, yard work or anything that gets your heart pumping a bit and breaks a slight sweat is moderate exercise for you. Moderate intensity is your goal, but keep in mind, light activity can make a difference in your health. Even 90 year old and older people in nursing homes are given the opportunity for light exercise routines during their daily life in the nursing homes.
