There are tests that measure chemicals in the blood to find out if there is chronic inflammation in the body. These tests are sometimes used to estimate heart disease risk. Scientists are wondering if these same kind of biomarkers could gauge risk for declining brain health.
There was a study published November 1, 2017 in Neurology that found having certain inflammatory markers in midlife was associated with brain shrinkage and poor memory in older age.
The study revealed:
- people with high levels of three or more biomarkers scored lower on the memory test when compared to people with no elevated inflammation markers
- these same people with high levels of three or more biomarkers had about 5% shrinkage in the hippocampus and other parts of the brain associated with Alzheimer's disease
The study was only observational and does not prove inflammation causes brain shrinkage or poor memory. However, many other studies note people with dementia have chronic inflammation.
What contributes to high levels of chronic inflammation?
- stress
- poor diet
- being overweight
- not exercising
