Don't Skip Your Exercise Just Because the Weather is Bad

Yes, I should take my own advice. If it rains, I don't want to get out. If it snows I sure don't want to get out. If it is too hot or too cold I don't want to get out. Conditions have to be perfect before I can venture out to exercise. Well that use to be the case. At Christmas, I always took 2 or 3 weeks vacation from exercise. I have since changed.

Skipping exercise for long stretches is like cutting your own nose off to spite your face. It can cheat your health. When we maintain a fitness level through regular exercise we gain a multitude of benefits ranging from improved insulin sensitivity to better cognitive health (source Tufts University newsletters).
I have learned from experience exercise simply has to be a part of my routine regardless of sunshine, rain, snow or holidays. Here are some tips to help you keep a steady exercise routine.
  • Put on the right clothing to exercise safely indoors or outdoors.
  • Dress in layers when it is cold outside
  • Warm your head with a nice thick winter hat for exercising in cold weather (I like making my own crochet winter hats). You would be amazed at how a simple thing like a "new hat" to wear motivates you to exercise.
  • Buy a few inexpensive pieces of exercise equipment and exercise in your living room
  • Yoga is easy to do at  home
  • Use hand weights and your own body resistance to work major muscles
  • Walk indoors at a local mall
  • Walk laps at a community center or large store
  • Join a fitness club
  • Take up an indoor activity such as bowling. Bowling can build strength and endurance.
  • Community education programs sometimes offer dance classes. Dancing is a fun way to exercise.
