What is complementary and alternative medicine? Complementary
and alternative medicine usually refers to practices that are
not integrated into conventional medicine. Treatments in the
category of complementary and alternative medicine are
constantly changing. Treatments change when studies prove them
to be effective or not.

Some of the treatments used in complementary and alternative
medicine are:

• Homeopathy
• Ayurveda
• Acupuncture
• Herbs

Are the treatments safe and will they work? Educate yourself
before starting any new complementary and alternative medicine
treatment, and always tell your doctor which ones you are
trying.

The two terms complementary and alternative are often grouped
together; however, they are not necessarily the same thing.
An example of a complementary treatment would be something used
along with the conventional therapies your doctor prescribes.

Alternative therapies are generally something used instead of
conventional methods. An example of an alternative therapy or
treatment might be seeing a homeopath or naturopath instead of
your regular doctor.

Some complementary and alternative medicine practitioners use
similar principles to what your conventional doctor might do.
Others might be quite different. The basic philosophies of
complementary and alternative medicine include:

• Your body heals itself
• Prevention is the most important element
• Learning and healing go together. The complementary and
alternative medicine practitioner sees himself or herself as a
teacher and mentor to guide you. You are the one who does the
healing.

There are five broad categories the National Institute of Health
uses for classification of therapies used by complementary and
alternative medicine practitioners, they are:

• Healing Systems
• Mind-Body Connections
• Dietary Supplements and Herbs
• Manipulation and Touch
• Energy Therapies

Contrary to what you might think, most doctors are not opposed
to complementary and alternative medicine. About half the
doctors in the United States refer people to complementary and
alternative practitioners.

On the dark side is that some alternative medicine practitioners
make exaggerated claims about curing disease. They may ask you
to forsake treatment from your conventional doctor to use their
unproven treatments. It is true also that some forms of
alternative medicine can even hurt you. It is wise to educate
yourself before using treatments, and always discuss your plans
to use alternative and/or conventional treatments with your
personal physician. Your doctor most likely is the best source
to help you sort out the good from the bad.

Stability and balance is the focus of part IV of this series.
Core exercises are an important part of overall fitness
training, but are often overlooked.


The area around your trunk and pelvis is your body’s core. A
strong core provides you with:

• Increased protection and support for your back
• Controlled movement
• A more stable center of gravity
• A more stable platform for sports movements

Good core stability that includes muscles in the pelvis, lower
back, hips and abdomen work in harmony to provide support to the
spine for all activities.

Weakness in these muscles can contribute to poor posture, lower
back pain and muscle injuries.
Basic exercises to enhance your core fitness include the:

• Bridge
• Abdominal crunch or sit-up
• Plank
• Quadruped

Core exercises should be done at least three times a week. For
the best results review the following:

• Choose exercises that work the core muscles all at the same
time.

• Quality of movement is better than quantity: Start out slow,
learn how to properly perform each exercise and gradually build
up to a greater number of repetitions.

• Breathe steadily and slowly: Do not hold your breath while

good idea to have a fitness trainer or physical therapist help

Coffee Legend: The Legend Of Kaldi

Coffee trees continue to grow in the Ethiopian highlands. The
legend of Kaldi originated here in the Ethiopian highlands.
There might be some truth to the Kaldi legend, although we will
probably never know for certain.



The legend is that it is said Kaldi discovered coffee after
noticing that his goats became extremely spirited after eating
berries from a certain tree – no doubt this was the “coffee
tree.” They became so highly spirited or you might say
“agitated” as coffee sometimes makes some humans a bit agitated
or stimulated, that the goats did not want to sleep at night.

Kaldi was dedicated and loyal to the abbot of the local
monastery and promptly reported his findings. The local
monastery made a drink with the berries. He discovered the drink
made from the berries of no doubt “the coffee tree,” kept him
alert in the long hours of evening prayers. It was not long
until the abbot shared his discovery with the other monks at the
monastery. Very slowly, the knowledge about the energizing
effects of the berries began to spread throughout the region and
on into the east until coffee reached the Arabian Peninsula. At
this point coffee began a journey that spread its reputation all
over the world.

We can all trace our heritage of coffee to the trees in the
ancient coffee forests of the Ethiopian highlands. Whether you
live in Asia, Africa, Central or South American, the islands of
the Caribbean or Pacific or the United States, coffee can be
found growing in areas all around the world.

The first to cultivate coffee and begin its trade were the
Arabs. In the fifteenth century, coffee could be found growing
in the Yemeni district of Arabia and on into the sixteenth
century coffee became known in Persia, Egypt, Syria and Turkey.

It may have become so popular because the Muslims forbid the
alcoholic drink by the Koran. The Muslims found coffee’s
energizing abilities to be an acceptable substitute for the
alcoholic drink.

Coffee was drunk in homes and public coffee houses, which were
called “gahveh khaneh.” These coffee houses began to appear in
cities across the Near East. There was nothing quite like these
coffee houses for people to gather in for all kinds of social
activity. They would drink coffee, talk with each other, listen
to music, watch performers, and play chess and tune into the
most recent news of the day.

In the short time of 100 years, coffee established itself as a
profitable crop throughout the world. Some crops prospered while
others did not. Fortunes were made and lost. New nations became
established on coffee economies.

By the end of the 18th century, coffee had become one of the
world’s most profitable crops.

Early Coffee Houses

Early coffee houses quickly became an important center for
exchange of information, so much so, that they were often
referred to as “Schools of the Wise.”



The European travelers to the Near East brought back stories of
the dark black beverage called “coffee.” By the 17th century,
coffee was in Europe and continued to become popular across the
continent. Some who were against coffee called the beverage
“bitter invention of Satan.” When coffee reached Venice in 1615,
the local clergy condemned it. It started such a stir among the
people that Pope Clement VIII was asked to intervene.  Before
the Pope made his decision, however, he tried the beverage of
coffee and found the drink satisfying. He then gave his approval
of coffee.

Controversy continued in the major cities of England, Austria,
France, Germany and Holland, however, coffee houses also
continued and were becoming centers of social activity and
communication that a lot of people really enjoyed. There were
over 300 coffee houses in London by the mid-17th century. Many
of these coffee houses attracted groups of people with common
interests such as merchants, shippers, brokers and artists.

Other businesses grew out of these specialized coffee houses,
one of which was, “Lloyd’s of London. Lloyd’s of London was
crated at the Edward Lloyd’s Coffee House.

Coffee houses began to rapidly appear, however, tea continued to
be the favored drink in the New World until 1773. The colonists
rebelled against a heavy tax placed on tea by King George. This
rebellion turned into what is now known as the Boston Tea
Party.”

The Boston Tea Party forever changed the American drinking
preferences from tea to “coffee.”

Today, The National Coffee Association is committed to the well
