The Dangers Of High Blood Pressure



High blood pressure left uncontrolled can damage your body for
years before symptoms develop. It is very important to

The following is some of the complications high blood pressure
can cause when left untreated:

• Damage to your arteries: High blood pressure increases the
pressure of blood flowing through your arteries that can
gradually cause a variety of problems. These changes can affect
arteries throughout your body and obstruct blood flow to your
heart, kidneys, brain and extremities. The damage can cause
chest pain (angina), heart attack, heart failure, kidney
failure, stroke, peripheral arterial disease and aneurysms.

• Damage to your heart: Coronary artery disease is a cluster of
diseases involving the arteries that supply blood to your heart
muscle. You could experience chest pain, a heart attack or
irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias). People with high blood
pressure are more likely to die from a heart attack. High blood
pressure forces the heart to overexert itself which can result
in enlarged left heart, which increases your chances of having a
heart attack, heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Heart
failure results when uncontrolled blood pressure over time
causes your heart muscle to weaken and work less efficiently.
Eventually the overwhelmed heart simply wears out and fails.

• Damage to your brain: Transient ischemic attack (TIA)
sometimes called ministroke is a brief, temporary obstruction of
blood supply to your brain. High blood pressure can cause
atherosclerosis or a blood clot which can cause these
ministrokes. A transient ischemic attack is often a warning that
you are at risk of a full-blown stroke. Stroke occurs when part
of your brain is deprived of oxygen and nutrients. Uncontrolled
high blood pressure can lead to stroke by damaging and weakening
your brain’s blood vessels. Dementia is a brain disease
resulting in impaired thinking, speaking, reasoning, memory,
vision and movement. High blood pressure that occurs as early as
middle age can increase the risk of dementia in later years.

• Damage to your kidneys: High blood pressure can injure both
the blood vessels in and leading to your kidneys, causing
several types of kidney disease. High blood pressure is one of
the most common causes of kidney (renal) failure.
Glomerulosclerosis is a type of kidney damage caused by scarring
of the glomeruli which can leave your kidneys unable to filter
waste effectively, ultimately leading to kidney failure. Kidney
artery aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of a blood vessel. Over
time, the excessive pressure of blood coursing through a
weakened artery can cause a section to enlarge and form an
aneurysm. If the aneurysm ruptures it can cause life-threatening
internal bleeding.

• Damage to your eyes: Retinopathy is when damaged blood vessels
leak or become blocked. The condition can lead to bleeding in
the eye, swelling of the optic nerve, blurred vision and
complete loss of vision. Choroidopathy is when fluid accumulates
under the retina when there is a leaky blood vessel in the
choroids. If this occurs, it can result in vision distortion or
in some cases scarring that impairs vision. Optic neuropathy is
when blocked blood flow damages the optic nerve. It can lead to
the death or dysfunction of optic nerve cells, which can cause
bleeding within the eye or vision loss.

Typically high blood pressure is a chronic condition that
gradually causes damage over the years. High blood pressure can
arise quickly and severely, which requires immediate emergency
treatment.

affect other areas of the body leading to problems such as:

• Sexual dysfunction
• Bone loss
• Trouble sleeping

It seems as though most women gain weight as they age. This is
not a necessary part of getting older. You can take steps to
prevent weight gain or lose what you have already gained through
proper diet and exercise. It is never too late.

Women gain about a pound a year during the perimenopause period
(the years just before menopause. However, changing hormone
levels are not necessarily the cause of weight gain. In this
article read how some simple tips to help you get rid of the
unwanted pounds or stop them dead in their tracks. You don't
want extra weight to carry around while taking care of your
business of "living."

Review below some of the possible causes for this weight gain:

• Exercising less
• Eating more
• Burning fewer calories
• Genetic factors may also play a role in weight gain

Excess weight can lead to serious health problems that include
but are not limited to:

• Increased risk of high cholesterol
• Increased risk of high blood pressure
• Increased risk to insulin resistance

All of the above can lead to type 2 diabetes as well as heart
disease and stroke. There is also evidence that suggest weight
gain during the menopausal years increases breast cancer risk.

Women who lose weight after menopause can reduce their risk of
breast cancer by 20 percent. By contrast, women who gain in
excess of 20 pounds after menopause increase their breast cancer
risk by nearly 20 percent.

You can prevent or reverse weight gain at any age. The
techniques for maintaining healthy weight at any age are the
same. Eat healthy, nothing in excess and keep moving. It is
never too late to begin a healthy lifestyle, and lose unwanted,
unhealthy pounds.

An effective approach to losing weight after menopause includes:


• Aerobic exercises that will boost your metabolism and help you
burn fat. Strength training exercises increases muscle mass,
boost your metabolism and strengthens your bones.

• In addition to traditional aerobic exercise routines you can
spend time doing the things you love that keep you moving such
as gardening and dancing.

• Reduce calorie intake. Eat less of the foods you normally
consume each day. Be careful not to cut back too drastically or
it will make shedding extra pounds harder. Due to slower
metabolism as you get older you need about 200 fewer calories a
day. Try eating before you actually become hungry, smaller
portions, several times a day. A good rule to follow is not to
let more than 5 hours go by without fueling your body with
something nutritious. You should have 3 meals per day, 2 snacks
and a bedtime snack. Fill up on fruits and vegetables; give
yourself a little protein and healthy fat for each snack and
meal.

• Decrease dietary fat. Emphasize fats from healthy sources like
nuts, olive, canola and peanut oils.

• Drink 8 eight ounces of water per day

The single most important factor for maintaining a healthy body
composition, which translates into more lean muscle mass and
less body fat, is:

• Increased physical activity that includes strength training

If you apply these few simple tips it should be enough to get
you started on either keeping the weight off as you age or
losing those pounds you have put on while taking care of the
business of life otherwise.

Health Benefits Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The American Heart Association recommends people eat fish
(particularly fatty fish) at least two times a week.  Fatty fish
sources include:



Mackerel
Lake trout
Herring
Sardines
Albacore tuna
Salmon

All the above mentioned fatty fish sources are high in two kinds
of omega-3 fatty acids, which are eicosapentaenoic acide (EPA
and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). 

Omega-3 fatty acids have long been known to benefit the heart of
healthy people as well as those at high risk for cardiovascular
disease.

The American Heart Association also recommends we eat foods that
contain alpha-linolenic acid (LNA) which can become omega-3
fatty acid in the body.  Researchers do not know just how much
more benefit it is to add these foods.  More studies are needed
to show a cause-and-effect relationship between alpha-linolenic
acid and heart disease.

To learn more about omega-3 levels for different types of fish
and mercury levels, which can be a concern, please review the

The suggestions below are a good guide to use for consuming
omega-3 fatty acids:

Patients without documented coronary heart disease should eat
a variety of (preferably fatty) fish at least twice a week.
They should also include oils and foods rich in alpha-linolenic
acid such as flaxseed, canola and soybean oils, and walnuts.
Patients with documented coronary heart disease should consume
about 1 g of EPA+DHA per day preferably from fatty fish.  A
capsule form can also be considered in consultation with the
physician.
Patients who need to lower triglycerides should take 2 to 4
grams of EPA+DHA per day provided as capsules under a
physician’s care.

The way that omega-3 fatty acids reduce CVD risk is still not
known and is still being studied.  Large-scale epidemiologic
studies suggest that people at risk for coronary heart disease
benefit from consuming omega-3 fatty acids from plants and
marine sources.  Research has shown the following:

Decrease risk of arrhythmias, which can lead to sudden cardiac
death
Decrease triglyceride levels
Decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque
Lower blood pressure (slightly)

How much each person should take is still unclear.  Studies
suggest taking EPA+DHA ranging from 0.5 to 1.8 grams per day
(either as fatty fish or supplements) significantly reduces
deaths from heart disease and all causes.  Total intake of
alpha-linolenic acid should be 1.5-3 grams per day to be
beneficial.

More studies are needed to confirm and define the health
benefits of omega-3 fatty acid supplements for preventing a
first or subsequent cardiovascular emergency.

The American Heart Association recommends most to increase
omega-3 fatty acid intake through foods.  Coronary artery
disease patients may not be able to get enough omega-3 by diet
alone.  They may want to consult with their doctor about taking
a supplement.

The American Heart Association also feels supplements could help
people with high triglycerides.  Your physician will be able to
decide what dosage is right for you.

Always keep in mind to look for a high-quality omega-3 fatty
acid supplements, free of contaminants before using.

Establish A Good Sleep Routine To Keep Headaches At Bay

Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Not
getting enough sleep or not sleeping well can make you
irritable.


Everyone needs a good night’s sleep to give them
enough energy to face the day ahead. Headaches can interfere
with sleep and sleeping well. It can become a cycle. Sleeping
poorly sometimes triggers more headaches. More headaches
continue to keep you awake and/or keep you from sleeping well at
night. So what can you do?

This article should give you a few
tips on how to promote good sleep, and stop the cycle of
headaches interfering with your sleep.

Sleep is very important. It helps you fight off fatigue and
stress. On the other hand, sleeping too much can have the same
effect. Either of these scenarios can only aggravate head pain.

Ways of promoting good sleep include:

• Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day – even on
weekends and holidays. When you get about the same amount of
sleep every night you can keep headaches away easier.

• Napping should never be a substitute for a full night’s sleep.
Naps during the day should last 15 to 30 minutes. Longer naps
can interfere with regular nighttime sleep.

• Aerobic exercise especially can help you fall asleep faster
and give you a more restful night’s sleep. The key here is to
exercise often. Timing is important. If you exercise too close
to bedtime you make it more difficult to fall asleep.

• Relaxing at the end of the day can promote better sleep. You
might try listening to soothing music, soaking in a warm bath or
reading a favorite book, just whatever it is you like doing for
relaxation. Avoid alcoholic beverages for relaxation. Alcohol
can aggravate headaches and make it harder to stay asleep.
Caffeine and nicotine can interfere with sleep.

• A light snack at bedtime may help you relax, but avoid heavy
meals.

• Drink less before bed to avoid nighttime trips to the toilet.

• Don’t watch television or take work materials to bed.

• Close your bedroom door.

• Use a fan to block out distracting noises.

• Use your bedroom just for sleep and intimacy.

• Keep your sleeping area comfortable, not too warm or not too
cold.

• If you can’t fall asleep within 15 minutes, get up. Perform
any kind of a quiet activity until you become drowsy.

• Check your medications to be sure they do not contain caffeine
or other stimulants that may interfere with sleep. This includes
headache medications.

• If you resort to sleeping pills, check with your doctor first
as to which brand to purchase over the counter or prescription.
Your doctor can help you understand how to use them safely and
tell you which ones won’t interact with other medications.

Headaches can sometimes be directly related to not sleeping or
not sleeping well. Try to get better sleep to alleviate some of
your headache pain.

Almost always people who experience hangovers from too much to
drink the night before will end up with a headache. It is like
your body’s signal to a tired body that did not sleep well or
maybe not even at all.

Getting Started With A Walking Routine



You have finally decided to get fit, to feel better and have
more energy to do all things you want to do. Don’t jump in too
quick! You need to help your body adapt to the demands of
repetitive movement. Take time to warm up and stretch before you
exercise. Don’t forget to cool down afterward.




A warm-up activity that uses the same muscles you will use
during your workout is the best choice. If you are going to take
a brisk 30-minute walk, walk slowly for five to 10 minutes to
warm up.

Walking is probably about the safest type of exercise you can
do. It is low-impact, which means it does not take a lot of wear
and tear on your bones and joints. It also has numerous health
benefits. Walking can also ease you into a higher level of
fitness. If you have done just about nothing in the way of
exercise, walking is probably the safest way to start toward
becoming fit. When you master walking and become stronger then
try other exercise routines like working out on a stair stepper
or whatever else is available at your nearest YMCA or work-out
gym.

achieve:

•It keeps your heart healthy by lowering low-density lipoprotein
(LDL) cholesterol (the bad cholesterol0 and raising high-density
lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the good cholesterol).

•If you have high blood pressure, walking may reduce it.

•Regular exercise reduces your risk of developing type 2
diabetes

•If you already have type 2 diabetes, a regular walking program
can improve your body’s ability to process sugar, lower your
blood sugar, reduce your risk of heart disease and help you live
longer.

•Walking burns calories, which can help you, manage your weight.


•A brisk walk is a good way to reduce stress

•Walking can help you to stay strong and active as you get older


One of the important pieces of equipment you will need for your
walking program is comfortable and supportive footwear. Loose
fitting, comfortable clothing is best for work-outs. If you walk
outside choose clothes appropriate for the weather. Dress in
layers if it is cold and of course, dress lighter for warm
weather. Avoid rubberized materials that do not allow
perspiration to evaporate. After dark think about wearing bright
colors or reflective tape that motorists can see you better.

Remember your warm up period. Warming up the muscles reduces
chance of injury. There are several difference stretches that
you can perform as well. If you are designing your own walking
program, you might check with a local physical therapist for
specific stretches to do before and/or after your work-out.

For myself, I rushed into a walking program several years ago
and developed a serious problem, which lead me to a podiatrist.
Since that time I have a specific stretching exercise I must do
three times a day regardless of whether or not I work-out. It is
wise to ease into even the low-impact walking routines, do your
warm-ups and cool downs. Rushing into exercise without properly
warming up the muscles can lead to serious injuries.

Review the following tips:

•Start slow and easy

•If you have been inactive and tire easily, at first, walk only
as far as or as fast as you find comfortable.

•If you can walk for only a few minutes, let that be your
starting point, then add one minute the next work-out. After
several weeks you should be able to build up to a 30 minute walk


•Walk with good posture, holding your back as straight as
possible

•Land on your heel, then roll to your toe. Heel to Toe, Heel to
Toe.

•If you are so out of breath that you cannot carry on a
conversation as you walk, you are probably walking too fast and
should slow down.

•Keep a record of the distance you walk or how long you walked
for inspiration as you reach your walking goal of 30 minutes or
so every day.

•Always do your cool down after a walking session. This helps
reduce the stress on your heart and muscles. End each walking
session by walking slowly for about five minutes. Repeat your
stretches.
