    Foods to Eat When You are Prone to Firery Heartburn

    That horrible fire called "heartburn" is not a good way to remember the tasty food you just ate. Don't worry. You do not necessarily have to eat only a bland and boring list of foods to avoid heartburn. In fact, the foods that create heartburn are different for everyone. If you quickly forget which foods causes your heartburn attacks, keep a journal.

    If spices bother you, you can still make lean meats, fish, poultry, vegetables, legumes, fruits and whole grains "flavorful." Try using smaller amounts of spices and be mindful of blends that contain cayenne or chili powder (if those spices irritated you). You can also use fresh herbs to season your foods. Use fresh parsley, oregano and basil.

    Roast your food. Roasting vegetables makes them sweeter tasting. Carrots, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, squash, and Brussels sprouts all do well roasted. Broil, saute or grill food to bring out intense flavor. Eat vegetables raw. If tomato sauce bothers you, a raw tomato might not. Cut the fat when you use sauces. Blend low-fat yogurt with cucumber and basil or saute mushrooms in a little olive oil. Blend basil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese and a dash of olive oil or water, then use a tablespoon of it on food.

    • low-fat yogurt with fruit or nuts
    • whole-grain toast
    • a side of chilled whole grains like "quinoa" mixed with fruit or topped with some yogurt
    • think salads with protein like chicken or beans

    Don't Overdo it Taking Vitamin D Supplements.

    Although Vitamin D has long been known to help build strong bones, taking too much of it is not a good thing. That is, more than 4,000 international  units (IU) per day. Research is still not clear, yet some woman will benefit from taking Vitamin D supplements along with sufficient calcium intake to promote their bone health.     Stick to some simple guidelines to safely take vitamin D supplements:
    1. You probably don't need more than 600 to 800 IU per day, which is adequate for most people Unless your doctor recommends it, avoid taking more than 4,000 IU per day which is at the safe upper limits.
    2. Choose food over pills. If possible, get your Vitamin D from food sources rather than supplements. Choose fortified dairy products, fatty fish, sun-dried mushrooms
    3. Let your doctor know. Many people take high-dose supplements on their own and their doctors may not even be aware of it. If you eat a well-balanced diet and include good sources of Vitamin D, you may not need a supplement at all.

    3. Strive toward a healthy weight. If you carry extra pounds especially around the mid section it is a strain upon the heart and pushes you closer to diabetes.
    4. Liven up your diet. Add fruits and vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fat, good protein from beans, nuts fish and poultry, and herbs and spices. Shy away from processed foods, salt, rapidly digested carbohydrates from white bread, white rice, potatoes, etc., red meat, soda and/or other sugar-sweetened beverages.
    5. Drink alcohol in moderation (if at all). If you drink alcohol, limit your intake to one to two drinks per day for men and no more than one per day for women.

    Eat evenly sized meals beginning with breakfast. You will be better off spreading your calorie intake out evenly throughout the day. Never skip breakfast. It can set you up to overeat at lunch. A breakfast meal also helps rev up the metabolism for the day that helps you burn more fat. If you plan to eat at least 450 calories per meal you can avoid hunger between meals.

    Get enough sleep. Studies link shorter sleep duration with higher risk of being overweight or obese. How much is enough? On the average, adults should sleep 7 to 9 hours.

    Weigh yourself often. A digital scale is best. Record your weight every day. Research shows people who weigh themselves often are more likely to lose weight and keep it off.
