Four Important Elements Of A Good Rounded Fitness Training Routine Part I: Aerobic Fitness

A good rounded fitness training routine includes four elements
which are:

• Aerobic fitness
• Muscular fitness
• Flexibility
• Stability and balance

In part I of this series I will discuss aerobic fitness.

You might be very much into the commitment of fitness and just
looking to optimize your results. Or you might have just begun
your journey (which is where I am now) to improved health and
you want to establish a rounded fitness training routine.
Regardless of which category you fit into it is important to
base your exercise goals upon these four primary elements of a
well rounded fitness training routine.

Aerobic fitness includes any kind of activity you do, from
taking a simple walk down a lovely, scenic path to mowing grass
and tending flowers in your flower garden. All aerobic
activities require oxygen. Regular aerobic fitness exercise
increases your body’s ability to use oxygen. How well your body
uses oxygen is called your “aerobic capacity.” Your goal for
good health and long life is to keep your aerobic capacity high.
An aerobic capacity in high gear delivers large amounts of
oxygen throughout your body efficiently through your heart,
lungs and blood vessels.

In addition to keeping your major life sustaining organs working
properly aerobic exercise helps you in daily activities. Suppose
you suddenly need to run to your car in an unexpected rain
shower just as you stepped out from one of your favorite
department stores or worse yet, right out of the beauty salon. A
high aerobic capacity will allow you to rise to this unexpected
challenge without leaving you all out of breath. Your joints and
bones will also rise to the occasion and help to transport you
safely and quickly to your car.

The key to achieving aerobic capacity is to find fitness
training activities that you enjoy and can do regularly. I just
recently took out a membership in our local YMCA. Thus far, I am
still on the treadmill at a moderate speed and duration. I
noticed, however, this past Sunday, there was a jazzercise class
going on. I thought how wonderful, I might try that later on as
I gain more and more aerobic capacity to do so. They were really
taking some high steps and they were not all the younger
generation either. Many were as me, from the baby boomer
generation.

In the gym I also saw one of my old male classmates from 6th
grade. I was sorry to see he had let his hair turn grey!
However, I suppose in a way, men do look more distinguished with
grey hair.

I am keeping my grey hairs covered at the moment! This is not
actually a source of pride, I feel, but just a style I feel best
in at the moment. We need to continue throughout our lives to do
the little things that raise our self esteem.

This is another area I continually have to work on since growing
up among a traditional sect of Pentecostal people. For the most
part, I have endured more scorning, condemnation and judgments
from this tribe of people than any other I have ever been
associated with.

I do not believe it is the Good Lord’s plan to position tribes
or sects of people in this world to continually look out onto
others with scorn, condemnation and judgments. I am forever
finding ways to set myself apart from those types of sins and
unrighteousness. I now call myself just one of God’s elect. I
claim no other religious affiliation.

However, it seems this certain tribe or sect of people feel like
they can put on a dress, never put the scissors to their hair,
never bother with the slightest type of make-up to enhance their
appearance, and then proceed to scorn, judge and or condemn, use
their tongue in all kinds of unkind words of malice toward
others, and then leave that person to suffer with the
consequences of all that, while they go on about their merry
way, with their long dresses and long hair swaying in the wind.

I find myself saying, God forgive them, for they seem to know
not what they do to others with that type of behavior. I get
back up off the ground or out of the corner where these people
have pushed me and proceed to try and live a quiet, healthy
life. Every opportunity I find, I do something good to those
that do evil to me. Another scripture that comes to my mind at
this moment is where it is says: “it is better for a man to live
on the housetop than to live inside the house with a brawling
woman.” Thus, is an example of a traditional Pentecostal
woman……. At least in the tribe and sect of people I have been
associated with.

At any rate, back to another important part of life is gaining a
high aerobic capacity. You need not ever limit yourself to a
single activity, such as running or walking. Add variety to
increase your motivation to stay active. Try some simple dance
classes such as the jazzercise.

Lifting Weights Properly To Help Prevent Injuries

You are off the couch and into the gym on the treadmill now for
about 7 days. You have worked your way up to about 21 minutes on
the treadmill and even lost two pounds. Is it time to get on the
other machines? In this article read some do’s and don’ts of
weight training proper technique.

It sure looks easy enough as you watch some of the others in the
gym lifting weights and huffing and puffing, walking two steps
forward, and lifting the little hand held weights. Weight
training does look easy, but if you don’t take proper weight
training technique into account, you might end up injuring
yourself and doing more harm than good. Learn the right way and
the wrong way to lift weights.

You may never be a true bodybuilder or a professional athlete,
however, if you learn some proper weight lifting techniques, you
can improve your strength, increase your muscle tone, help
yourself lose fat and gain muscle mass. It sure would be nice to
improve bone density and help ward off osteoporosis as well. If
done correctly, weight training can give you all these benefits
and you won’t end up with injuries during the process.

Don’t think you can stand and watch others in the gym and learn
the proper techniques of weight training. Luckily I have not
done this myself. Actually, I kind of thought about it, but I
suppose it is better safe than sorry, so i will be consulting a
weight training specialist before I start any kind of weight
training program for myself.

Review below some of the common weight training injuries that
could occur if you lift weights improperly:

•Sprains
•Strains
•Tendonitis
•Fractures
•Dislocations

Over time, if you continue using the same improper weight
training technique chronic injuries could include:

•Rotator cuff damage
•Muscle overload
•Bone stress injuries
•Nerve damage

Even though most of these injuries are not life-threatening,
they can be painful and hinder your efforts to build strength
and muscle mass.

If you are just getting started consider working with some of
the following weight training specialists:

•Physical therapist
•Athletic trainers
•Fitness and exercise specialists who have been specifically
trained in weight-training techniques

All of the above weight training specialists can help you
practice proper technique. Even if you are not a novice and have
been using weights for awhile, it might be a good idea to
schedule time with a trainer so you can show the trainer your
technique and be sure it the right technique to be performing.

Review some of the following tips to keep you safe during your
weight training program:

•Check with your doctor. Especially if you are older than 40 and
inactive, check with your doctor before starting a weight
training program.
•Set goals
•Breathe properly. Your blood pressure can increase to dangerous
levels if you hold your breath during weight training. Exhale
during the lift and breathing normally during your weight
training exercise can prevent this. A weight training specialist
can show you exactly how this is done.
•Seek balance by working all your major muscles, which are the
abdominals, the legs, the chest, the back, shoulders and arms.
•Lift an appropriate amount of weight
•Don’t do too many sets of each exercise.
•Don’t rush
•Rest
•Be consistent: Three workouts per week will build muscles and
two workouts will maintain the strength you have gained.
•Wear shoes
•Store your weights properly.

concentration and productivity throughout the morning

Encourage your children and adolescents to eat a healthy
breakfast. It is especially important for these two age groups.
The American Dietetic Association says children who eat a
healthy breakfast are more likely to have better concentration,
problem-solving skills and eye-hand coordination. In addition,
these children may also be more alert, and less likely to miss
days of school. Creativity may be easier for children who eat a
healthy breakfast.

What exactly is a healthy breakfast? A healthy breakfast should
be a variety of foods like whole grains, low-fat protein or
dairy sources, and fruit. All these food groups provide complex
carbohydrates, protein and a small amount of at. This is a
winning combination to delay hunger symptoms for longer periods
of time.

One way of being sure you eat a healthy breakfast each day is to
choose one item from at least three of the following food
groups:

•Fruits and vegetables (if you choose juice, it should be 100
percent juice without added sugar)
•Grains such as rolls, bagels, hot or cold whole-grain cereal,
low-fat bran muffins or Melba toast
•Dairy such as skim milk, low-fat yogurt cups or low-fat cheese
like cottage and natural cheeses
•Protein like hard-boiled eggs, peanut butter, lean slices of
meat

A quick breakfast on the go could be dry, ready-to-eat cereal
with a banana and low-fat or skim milk. Choose cereal higher in
fiber. If counting calories, choose cereals lower in calories.
Carnation Instant Breakfast drink has always been a favorite of
mine for breakfast in a hurry. Oatmeal is another good choice,
but may not be appropriate if you are on the go or in a hurry.
Hard boiled eggs are easy to take with you. Eggs are full of
nutrients. I could not get through a week without my eggs,
either hard boiled or medium over.

If you eat out for breakfast you can still make healthy choices.
Whole-grain bagels, rolls and English muffins are better than
fat-filled doughnuts, scones, croissants or biscuits. Try to do
without the oversized breakfast sandwiches, the bacon, the
sausage and whole milk; these are not your best choices for a
healthy breakfast.

If time never seems to be on your side, try to figure out what
you will eat the night before and up a little earlier to enjoy
it. You can also try packing something to take with you. Never
think you are saving calories by skipping breakfast. You will
probably end up “starving” by lunchtime and possibly overeat, or
midmorning hunger leads you to grab for a high-fat treat just
because it is quick to stuff into your mouth.

Remember that making nutritious breakfast choices can lay the
foundation for healthier eating all day long. A healthy
breakfast should definitely be something you fit into your daily
schedule.

An Overview Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine

What is complementary and alternative medicine? Complementary
and alternative medicine usually refers to practices that are
not integrated into conventional medicine. Treatments in the
category of complementary and alternative medicine are
constantly changing. Treatments change when studies prove them
to be effective or not.

Are the treatments safe and will they work? Educate yourself
before starting any new complementary and alternative medicine
treatment, and always tell your doctor which ones you are

The two terms complementary and alternative are often grouped
together; however, they are not necessarily the same thing.
An example of a complementary treatment would be something used
along with the conventional therapies your doctor prescribes.

Alternative therapies are generally something used instead of
conventional methods. An example of an alternative therapy or
treatment might be seeing a homeopath or naturopath instead of
your regular doctor.

Some complementary and alternative medicine practitioners use
similar principles to what your conventional doctor might do.
Others might be quite different. The basic philosophies of
complementary and alternative medicine include:

• Your body heals itself
• Prevention is the most important element
• Learning and healing go together. The complementary and
alternative medicine practitioner sees himself or herself as a
teacher and mentor to guide you. You are the one who does the
healing.

There are five broad categories the National Institute of Health
uses for classification of therapies used by complementary and
alternative medicine practitioners, they are:

• Healing Systems
• Mind-Body Connections
• Dietary Supplements and Herbs
• Manipulation and Touch
• Energy Therapies

Contrary to what you might think, most doctors are not opposed
to complementary and alternative medicine. About half the
doctors in the United States refer people to complementary and
alternative practitioners.

On the dark side is that some alternative medicine practitioners
make exaggerated claims about curing disease. They may ask you
to forsake treatment from your conventional doctor to use their
unproven treatments. It is true also that some forms of
alternative medicine can even hurt you. It is wise to educate
yourself before using treatments, and always discuss your plans
to use alternative and/or conventional treatments with your
personal physician. Your doctor most likely is the best source
to help you sort out the good from the bad.
